Corner notched coral
« on: August 26, 2011, 12:30:25 am »
I know I've posted a lots of points lately from Timos rock, but I'm going to post another. I'm surprised how easy cooked coral knaps. It doesn't take much to percussion or pressure . It gets an A in my book of workable materials.

You are an animal with this stuff Tower  >:D  I love it!

So, probably a dumb question, is Coral really "coral" as in reef, saltwater growth, etc?  Where or how can a guy get some of this stuff to work...it looks really clean and really gorgeous.

Yes, it was alive eons ago. Its agatized, or fossilized coral. I acquired this in a swap , but I believe the large deposits are in Florida,& Georgia.  I love the stuff.

thanks for the info Tower...now I know what to search for online.

you wont find anything related to this coral from this river online. Only a handfull of us know about it, and its not laying on the bottom everywhere. Eddie and I have and another have cleaned out what holes we found. My neighbor is another one who has taken this coral around the country. the other popular river coral is the withlacoochee coral, but its a darker stain, the 2 pics are of the coochee coral and the other are soome I have pulled from the river by my house.
the most popular coral will be advertised as "Pasco County" coral

Tower, that is a fine point you made

Jeff, I recognise the top two pictures as withlacoochi. Is the rest of it the same? It don't look like it.
Also, when I heat up the withlacoochi it turns whiter and looses a lot of it's translucency. Reckon I'm heating it too hot?
Be thankfull for all you have, because no matter how bad you think it is...it can always be worse.
