Cipriano, you should have lots of reed where you're at.  It will probably be "giant reed", not phragmites, but it still works.  I gathered some reed in Austin when I lived there and the reed was just slightly weaker than phrag at the small diameters needed for arrows.

Yes.  I gathered some and taped it to a straight thick dowel rod to dry straight.. Curious if that will work?  I picked it up on the way to cross plains.  What's the max thickness for them?

Hmmm...I've never tried taping them to a stick, so I'm not sure.  The max thickness is about 1/2".  But the thickness will be determined by what you require for spine weight.
