Lil osage Bow Tillewr help needed
« on: December 04, 2010, 06:26:36 pm »
Well it's been a while since I had a chance to post anything or work on a bow. I finally had some time and bought a osage stave off of ebay.  Not a good thing to do.  It was not what i expected the stick measured out at 54" long  and 1 3/4 wide with knots and pins.  As i have never worked on osage before i thought I'd make an Apache replica bow and arrows as a wall hanger.  So off i go cleaning it up.  The stave Jr. came out at 49 1/2 " long and 1 1/4 wide  47 1/2" NTN so  as I'm shaving and filing i see this Lil stick has a bow inside.  Right now unbacked its drawing 45# @ 12". This is the point where i need help to finish the tillering a see photo bucket attachment.   Any help that y'all could give me would be great.  I had plans to back it with USPS browning wrapping paper.  I would like to get it to draw about 20" and anything over 35#.

Eli.

Looks to me like all the bend is at one point, just outside the fades (which seem a bit too long  to me).
I'd work the fade in towards the handle a bit and make the outer 2/3 of each limb work a bid more.
Of course it depends what style you are after, and plenty of folk like to keep the tips stiff, but that should be just the last 1/4.
Have a look at my website (click the globe symbol under my username) There's a section with short tillering videos where I  go right through the process, it may be of use, or at least give you a laugh at my Brit accent!

Eagle Eye,I agree with Del exactly.   But ,if that were my stave ,at that lenght,I'd build a D-bow. Get the entire stave working evenly. If you continue,(unless your going to sinew the back),it will set pretty bad.Not to mention bad stacking ,and rough shooting. If you had your heart set on a handle, you can build up the area with leather that will bend with the bow.It will last much longer, and be more comfortable to shoot.JMHO  God Bless

LOL and I agree exactly with PeteC about the handle too. ;D
The more of the bow you can get to share the bending the less stress there is.

PeteC and Del the Cat,

Thanks for your input, I like forward to reviewing your site Del.  I have ordered sinew from 3 rivers and with use to back the bow will post picks soon.
