Will sealing the leather with polyurathane keep the paint from cracking?

 If you don't put your paint on thick it will. I'd use acrylic paint, that way you can thin it down easy. Be sure and let it thoroughly dry before you spray it.

I used acrylic craft paint from Walmart on a raw hide backed bow and sealed it with Tru-Oil. My wife uses the same craft paint on paper mache she does and seals it with spray poly.
