Some Rock pics
« on: October 13, 2010, 11:18:48 pm »
I know this ain't knappin', but thought some of you might like to look at some rock. :)

This is the first piece of Horse Creek chert I have gotten my hands on.
The nodule was a gift from someone at the knap-in. Thanks again!

And I was spalling/bustin' up some rhyolite yesterday and the way this piece broke
I thought was kind of interesting. ( Hope some of you do, too.)

Some rhyolite is layers of volcanic ash that has settled and cemented together. Sometimes you
have to work away the excess until your preform is all within the same layer. Crossing from
one layer to another is 'sometimes' impossible. Each layer may be very different material.

Here's the whole piece. I hit it on the left side and the break traveled until it hit the softer,
finer grained layer and dove..............

close-up of same pic,

Now I'm going to take that creamy hump piece from the top piece and put
it back on the bottom piece.

close-up of same,

And here's a couple of pics with the rock sprayed with some water for color.

The wide wild world of rhyolite!
Thanks for looking.
Joe

Cool looking stuff! Boy, it looks tough. Love the colors in that hc.

Purdy stuff Joe. I am gonna try and do some justice to some rhyolite and some obsidian this weekend. I aint got nothin planned except knappin and archery. Well maybe a few other things. >:D
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intentions of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body. But rather to slide in sideways, thoroughly used up, totally worn out and loudly proclaiming....WOW WHAT A RIDE!!

That piece of Horse Creek is a beauty!  I need to get some more of that for sure.  The ones I kept have not been too exciting and kind of chalky.  You never know what any rock looks like on the inside until you crack (or cut) it open. Thanks for the pics Joe.
