Juniper- sinew rescue bow
« on: January 25, 2010, 10:10:56 pm »
I made this Pit River style bow about 12 years ago out of Juniper and sinew. one of the limbs developed 2 tension cracks, and also had a bad hinge above the handle. I recently wrapped the hinge with sinew and re tillered the bow to 50# at 24". The bow is is 48" n t n. It has a 2 ply sinew string. Rawhide wrapped tips, and brain tanned handle.
I never treated the wood till a few days ago. The bow is in excellent shape and shoots well. I'm glad I finally gave this old bow some attention.

Very nice replica. Great job on the save of a bow worthy of the resoration.  I have seen several short wide sinewed bows developed a crack in the belly like that. I think it is often from the sinew drying and pulling from the outsides of the bow causing the belly to open slightly.  Your fix should hold up fine. Congratulations.

Everytime you post one of your shorties it gets me all excited to get another one started.  I guess I will have to go get some juniper cut  and get it drying.
