Lowest GPP?
« on: September 20, 2009, 06:52:41 pm »
How low can a woodenbow reasonaly be shot at? Assuming the bow is rather efficient and well made, would 7 gpp be so light as to speel the end of the bow?

I ask because I've seen some wooden flightbows being shot for a while, as in a number of years. I was under the assumption that anything under 8 or 9 gpp would be too light?

Surely  he  is referring to  Girls Perfect Pasties  and  not Grains Per  Inch:)

grains per pound. as in arrow weight. he's asking if light weight arrows hurt bows, i think.

Like Marc, I have wooden flight bows that I regularly shoot arrows 4 grains per pound draw and sometimes even less.  That would be a 200 grain arrow for a 50-lb bow.

Here's some more info.  A crossbow generally has a shorter draw length than a hand held bow.  For example, a short limb crossbow with a 14" draw shooting 5ggp is the same as a long limb hand-held bow shooting 10gg with a 28" draw.  If all else is equal (same efficiency, etc.), the example crossbow with the shorter draw will shoot the 5ggp arrow at the same speed as the hand held bow will shoot the 10ggp arrow.

I generally don't go much below 8 gpp. I have shot some light carbon arrows out of my longbows, but I don't enjoy it much. The bow is noisy, and I find it not as accurate as a bit heavier arrow. The bow actually becomes more efficient with heavier arrows, and light arrows are USELESS for hunting.
