Title: Haitian wood?
Post by: Jesse on November 20, 2008, 07:09:02 pm
Just got back from Haiti. While I was there I saw a lot of boards that were cut from large diameter trees. It was very dense and tough. The color was like aged osage a little more orange though. I might be able to get some to the USA but wasnt sure if it would make a good bow. Anybody have any idea what wood this might be? The Haitians use it to construct there homes. I asked a local but he didnt know the name :-\ I think its from some sort of a fruit tree.

Jesse, When I was living in the U.S. Virgin Islands, they had a beautiful wood, that was like osage, and then light,to dark brown towards the center.  It was called licorice wood.  It made beautiful furniture, and tables.

I am pretty sure they have Lemon wood (Not the Fruit) in Haiti as well. Know theres quite a bit of it in Cuba. Its Yellar lookin as well. It was pretty popular in times gone by fer bow makin. Ifin its lemon wood , would be comparable to Hickry.

You are lucky to find any wood, or trees at all, since any peice of wood they can find either goes for making charcoal, or boats.
