lookin good,
steam or dry heat for those pretty curves?
-
steam for curves...
dry heat to lign up the crazy tips....
as you see i put it on top of a picture frame to show how straight she came out.
i still have to shoot her in, but i pulled it to 29 inches over 100 times tonite before the stain.

Nice looking bow. Curvy ;D. How did you make the oak tanin stain?
-
took a bunch of oak leaves and some sticks and bark and placed them in a black plastic bag to heat up and breakdown in the sunlight.
then i mashed it up real good and sifted it through an old t shirt.
its waterbased and real dark...as soon as i wiped it on i imediatly wiped it off, thinking it was too dark...but it was like any other stain, it lightend up a bit when i wiped the rest of it off.
not sure if it is teh "right" way.
i was experimenting...and broke!
hahahaha.

Thats the color of my Koi Pond this Morning.....I didn't get the net up before the Maple Trees Shed....and now I have 1200 gallons of Tannin Stained Water!!!Cant even see Fish....maybe I ought to soak a few Unfinished Staves in it for a While and see if that will work!!!
Nice Bow Jamie
-
I like the simple formula. I'll give it a try. I have plenty of oak leaves, twigs etc.........Oh yeah and broke. ;D How long did you leave it in the bag?
-
until it breaks down and gets....a "smell".
hahaha.
it goes away!

Nice bow Jamie! Full draw soon aye ::) ;D? The dye is interesting - will be tucked away until I need it..
-
yea, ill post pics tomorrow, as i just want the moisture i rubbed in with the tannin to dry good.
thats why its in the house/ up high.
ill make a string, either a cord handle or a wrapped leather one and full draw + a couple of shooting pics.
ive been working on my primitive stuff alot recently, kinda sharpenin my skills.
keeps me more in "touch" while im in the woods hunting now.

specs...59 ntn.
bow came in a little light at--45# @ 27"
i wraped jute around some problem knots just in case..and put a braintanned handlewrap with a latigo arrow pass, with beaver silencers on the tips.
some of the recurves pulled out as i realy pulled the heck out of it on the tree as im giving this one up.
the bow at full draw was canted... it felt too natural to me!
but i had the self timer on, so thats the best i could come up with..

Did you use the back with just the bark removed or take it down to another layer.
-

Thanks, Jamie, I have a well seasoned stave roughed out and ready to go and I like the recurve style - think I'll start one soon.

make sure the moisture is out as i had a heack of a time aligning the tips and string grooves...
i like the way it looks and im glad i made it, but i think if i do anythink to improve performance it will just be flippin the tips, when i need to.
nuthin against the pretty curves...i still do not see the added performance overcoming the practicality and time it took to make.
maybe if it was sinewed it would be another story, but i wraped up the problem areas just in case,as ive never made such a short recurve before!
