Title: One with my cane arrow!
Post by: GregB on September 29, 2008, 08:47:08 am
This was my first deer using cane arrows. The arrow punched through and actually broke the shoulder on the opposite side! Doe ran about 30 yards... :)

Thanks guys! Meant all the more using a cane arrow made from scratch! I think that's what this is all about, when you're successful it means a lot more to you then if shooting it at 100 yards with your 30-06!  ;)

Thank you! I look forward to some pictures from some of you with game taken with your homemade arrows.

Shannon, I used the knife I got from you to field-dress her...did a fine job!  ;)

Nice doe Greg. Those cane arrows are more than just pretty, they work good too. A little heat straightening and that one's ready to go again.

I skinned and deboned the doe yesterday afternoon, and couldn't believe what that cane arrow survived! Like I said, the arrow entry was just behind the right shoulder, and broke the shoulder bone of the opposite shoulder. But she must have either run by a tree or fell on the arrow causing the broadhead to rake across ribs to the rear of the deer, finally pulling the broadhead off the cane. The broadhead had the hardwood dowell insert I had glued in the end of the arrow still inside the broadhead. There was even some bloodclodding on the front side of the left hindquarter...and the cane didn't break! A cedar arrow would have definitely snapped because I've experienced using them for some twenty years now.

I think the cane is definitely worth the extra trouble of straightening them, if not only for the toughness and extra mileage you get from them over wood arrows. I like it!  ;D

not surprised the cane survived.  i took two hogs wit one cane arrow.  the second hog cracked it pretty good and i had to actually saw the shaft in half to get it out of the hog.  that arrow has a place of honor in my collection.  did you foreshaft the arrow or use an insert?  foreshafts greatly increase the life span of a cane arrow by snapping at the joint.

Wait till you try that Tonkin. It's a lot tougher than cane.

Mechslasher, I used a hardwood insert...I think oak.  Eddie, yeah I noticed the tonkin Anthony and I ordered is almost solid. It is straighter to begin with also then the river cane was when first cut. I'm hoping it will be easier to straighten. Seems like it has some weight to it as well, although I haven't weighed any yet. I'm sure we're going to like it.

Paul, pick a hair and try to split it! Just like you picked a feather on those doves I'm guessing!  ;)

Best of luck!

Greg, not only do those cane arrows last longer they just feel cool in your quiver and on the string, Great job on the crafting and shooting.  Where did you get the tonkin.       Kenneth
