Title: New Shoot shafts
Post by: Pappy on August 11, 2008, 07:37:27 am
I made up 4 new shafts this weekend from some sour wood shafts I have had for a couple of years.
I think it was much easier than the Cain. They were easy to get to spine wit a small hand plane and sandpaper. They shoot great.I mounted some of my trade points on 3 of them and  a 160 ace on one.
I also reworked some of my Cain.I just scraped the walls lightly and brought them right in.I ant sure
if you can do this with all Cain but what I am using is pretty thick walls so it seemed to work great.
The one I had that was to stiff were brought right in with just a small amount of scrapping.Anyone
ever done this wit Cain before ? ???

Nice meat makers you got there.  I have worked with some cane, and most of them have been scraped, sanded, kicked and cussed.  The only problem I have had is overheating the nodes, and it always seems to be the last node on the arrow.  I guess my boy will have a bunch of cane arrows.

Most of the cane I have worked with shot well and seem to be tollerant of spine differences. When I have tried to make matched sets there is always one or two that get set aside for a different bow. If I make several there will be at least two or three that shoot perfect and of hunting quality. What I like about them is that they are about unbreakable and if you can keep from loseing them you end up with a bunch to chose from. Oh nice looking arrows and good luck on the hunt.    Kenneth

Looking good Pappy. I have been using sourwood for a few years now and have never broken one yet. Sourwood makes an excellent hard hitting hunting arrow. Lately I've been working with cane so most of my hunting arrows this year are cane but I will continue to make sourwood arrows.   Nice work !     Pat

Pappy those are sure purdy! Can you show me how you do those at the classic next March at the Classic? For some reason I'm completely addicted to all this archery stuff. If you cant do it for a while do you or the guys at Twin Oaks start to go through withdrawl symptoms?

Good looking arrows Pappy. Never got to try sourwood but as I understand it makes really good arrows. Right now I'm addicted to bamboo arrows.

Pappy what do you use to cut the nocks with and how deep ?

I use a small band saw for the first cut ,then a small file to work them out,I cut them about 3/4
deep. One of the saws I have has a slot centered with the blade so I just lay it in the slot and that will center it right up. :)
