Title: turkey wing bone call
Post by: salad days on July 07, 2008, 11:17:02 pm
Hey all. Made this call and five others like it last weekend using ber643's build along for directions. They all came out great. I put up a flyer at the local Gander Mountain store that offer to trade turkey hunters their wing feathers in return for a call made for them out of their turkey's bones. I got 4 takers. some had broken bones but I did manage to make 6 complete calls. One I traded a guy at work for a whole buckskin which is what the lanyard on this call is made from. And I had one left over for me. Life is good!

Yeah they sound great. The smaller sized ones sound better to me than the really big ones. They are higher pitched and have a very clean tone like a young hen yelp. The big ones you get from really large toms sound like a gobbler yelp. hopefully the people that gave up wings for calls this year will tell their friends so I can get more feathers. I'd like to get to were I have to buy as little as possible. :)

Very nice looking call. You are right when you say the smaller bones sound more like hens. Sometimes these calls are the only thing I've found that will bring a hung up gobbler to ya'. Here's one I put together from hen bones, it's very high pitched. I'll pretty it up with Pygmy Rattler skins when I get back. I made Hillbilly one and the skins looked pretty good.

i seen a guy use a drinking straw once as a wing bone type call, sounded better than any suction call i've ever heard and i've heard lots of calls(mostly all in my vest)

yup they say hen wing bones sound like a hen, jakes like jakes and tom like toms.

hopefully i'll get drawn for fall season in our lottery, then we can legally shoot hens. then i'll make a couple hen wingbone calls for my self.

                                                       peace,

Here is a hen call I made from a road kill. I used ultrawire to tie on the keeper on this one.

Road kill-   You got to love making stuff from dead animals you find on the road.  I look back on missing the opportunity on that turkey on Dead Turkey Hill Road. ;D
