Title: yew stave split for 2 lighter weight bows for local youth group prize and raffle
Post by: superdav95 on April 04, 2024, 06:13:48 pm
Hey guys... Another boring yew build I know! but its for a good cause.   Im making a couple lighter weight bows to be donated to a local youth group (12-18).  One will be a charity raffle bow the proceeds of which will go to this group and the other will be a prize for the best shot at the girls camp which i've been asked to attend to give a day of archery instruction.  It should be fun!  Ive done this instruction for the girls for a number of years now and it always amazes me how much they enjoy it.  I figured it would add to the excitement a bit if they new a bow would go to the best shot.  Not exactly sure how will run it just yet as I will have several groups of girls come throughout the day.  I may just take all the names of the girls that hit a bullseye and draw a name.  any ideas???   anyway here are a few pics of the split stave im working with.   Ill be aiming for about 30lbs on top shot bow and 40-45lbs for the raffle bow.  as you can see in the pics here the stave branches off at one end so i may make them shorter draw.  we shall see how it goes when i start shaping them up.  My thinking on the raffle bow is to appeal to as many people hence the 40-45lbs. Most of the girls would likely not be able to shoot this bow very well i suspect.  I will raw hade back these and may decorate them a little.  thanks for following along. cheers!

Looks like fun Dave.

I never played with yew yet. I have one yew bow from DVS Hunter and it’s sweet. Doesn’t take much wood for a hunting bow. Pretty impressive stuff

Thanks so much for the offer Dave.

I was thinking about your give away for the best shot.

Maybe instead of for every girl who hit a bullseye.

Give a ticket for every bullseye. If someone gets ten they have a better chance than someone who gets one.

Really cool you are doing this.

Hope the raffle does well.

Dave , there is nothing boring about a yew bow build, especially if you are doing it. You might be surprised you can easily get 60lb longbows from each of these staves, if you wanted to. Shortish, bend through the handle, just qualifying as an English longbows, as narrow as 1" wide through the middle 12", will do the trick.

I say this because most kids won't truly appreciate a yew bow. I would be making a whitewood bow for a kid, at least for their first bow(I am a bit of a stingy bastard though ;))

I was kinda thinking the same thing.

Even the part about myself being a bit stingy. Although I like to think of it as frugal

You guys are hilarious!  Ya I’m a bit the same myself.  I feel a little pain every time a bow leaves my shop actually.  It sounds silly but not any less true.  My wife giggles at me every time I hand over a bow and comment how I’ll miss it.  Even saying it out loud does sounds funny but that’s me.

I may rethink it then.  I may do a 5 piece bamboo bow instead for them.  At least this way I can repair easily or replace a section if needed.  Also would put a shelf in the bow too.   I think I’ll do them up regardless and then decide when I see them shooting and if they survive anyway.  Lots can happen between now and finished bows.  Thanks for the input!

I got one of these little staves to basic floor tiller.  bend looks pretty good.  I like to sand down my rough work as i go so as to not have any surprises.  Im aiming for around 40-45lbs with this one. Im planning to do longer sweeping fplipped tips on these little bows.  they will be semi working recurves.  heres a few pics of where im at so far.  it has a deflexed top limb midlimb.  I may just match this deflex in the other limb or steam or heat it out straight.

Thanks razorbak!  I had some time today to work on it and just a few breaks here and there.  this evening i added my sweeping recurves.  i kept them mild.  the heat correction went to plan with the deflex in the top limb.  now they are both straight and will give it  rest overnight.  Thanks for looking and following along.

Little update on these little bows. I did some work on the tiller tree and think i got the bend pretty even for low brace.  from what i see i need a little more bending on my outters yet but it coming along.  lots of character in this piece and little knots.  ill have to keep an eye on these as i get bending more.  Ive saturated with some thin ca glue and will repeat as needed.  ill throw on some nocks and get a string on it and proceed from there.

Ive been crazy busy with life stuff getting in the way of what id rather be doing.  I finally got some time to finish geting this bow braced and nocks put on.  I went with slightly different style nocks then im used to as i was trying to use up a couple thin strips of buffalo horn pieces up.  seemed to go well and the bow shot very well and quite snappy.  I have no idea yet of actual poundage.  Ive misplaced my digital bow scale in my messy garage!  Ill find it and get some numbers up here soon.  it feels little heavier then the target of 45lbs.  probably closer to 50 plus maybe.  it shoots quite snappy anyway.  I have not backed this one yet and im thinking i should just as a protection against folks bangning it around and such.  I also went with a slightly different shaped handle to try out.  I realy like it.  I basically just kept filing away till my hand felt comfy.  Its got a 1/8" positive tiller and its dimensions are, 62.5" ntn.  1 5/8" out of fades narrowing to about 1 1/4" about 3/4's the way up the limbs to then narrow to 3/8-1/2" at the tips.  I had some twist to heat out after the flipped tips were put in. all and all so far I only see about 1/2" of set.  still a little more sanding to do yet and finish it up once i find my scale and get to the poundage i want.    Im was going to leave the handle bare but wonder if most folks would want and leather wrap.  whats your feeling on this guys?  should i also do a raw hide backing too.  Also what poundage would you recommend for a charity raffle??? let me know what you think.

I always enjoy seeing your work, Dave.  I hope some kid appreciates how lucky they are to get one of these.  I'm working on a kid's bow right now, a juniper-sinew, and I know it's going to hurt to give it away.  Fortunately it's too short and light for me to shoot anyway, so that will help.  :)  I think a whitewood or bamboo bow would be a better gift for a kid, just because white woods are so much more durable than juniper or yew.

A thought about decorating:  I happen to know that many girls love Celtic knot work or elvish leafy stuff on the back of a bow.  Earth-tone acrylic markers (search on Amazon) are a great way to apply such designs.

For the contest, I like the idea of giving kids a ticket for each bullseye they hit.  Another idea:  There's an archery range at a camp we teach at every summer.  They just score each kid's best three shots.  If you want to just award it based on potential skill, that might be a simple way to go.

Thanks for those suggestions WB!  I like that idea of best three shots.  I am willing a a couple bamboo bows now as well in case I feel like this bow make be a little too much to maintain or appreciate.  The boo bows are pretty tough and resilient and easy to repair if needed.  I like the decoration idea too.  The scouts theme for the boys camp fleur de lis sympol.  I’ve been asked to do the YM camp also so double the bows!   Will be a busy summer but should be a blast.  I’ll take some pictures.

So an update on these bows.  i decided to make different bows to donate for this.  I decided to make a couple of bamboo bows.  they are 32 and 35 pounds respectively.  They finished out nice and shoot really well for light weight bows.  here are a few pics.   as for the yew bows i may save those for something else.  Im still doing a raffle bow for this youth group which is a yew bow as well.  its a ambidextrous shooter which may appeal to more people too.   Ill post some pics of that bow soon.

Mighty fine bows there superDav
My experience with kids is they are very excited at first but many will be soon carried away by other interests
In many cases it's a waste of time and energy doing a work of art for kids.
They simply are unable to appreciate it.
If you spend enough time with them you'll eventually find one or two that get really interested and that's when it's worth to give your best

.... and yes I'm frugal too  :OK

Thanks for the comments guys.  I greatly appreciate your input.  These two bows will be well suited for young archers.

As for the raffle bow giveaway I’ve decided to donate a yew billet bow that I finished up recently.  It’s an ambidextrous bow and is a smooth shooter.  It’s a 64” yew billet bow that draws 55lbs at 28”.  It’s speed is very good and it shoots accurately and consistent.  I’ve got approx 180 shots through this bow now.  String runs right down the middle and suitable as left hand shooter.  It’s got buffalo horn tips and handle overlays.  Beaver tail arrow pass on either side.   I was getting consistent speeds in mid 180’s with 500 grain arrow.  I haven’t figured out how to post a raffle online or on here for those interested in one of my bows.  The raffle draw will be occurring on the 13th July this year.  Each ticket is $20.  I’m not sure if it’s against pa rules to post bow raffles I’m sure administrators here would know.  100% of the proceeds will go to a local youth group fundraising effort.  Thanks for looking!

Here’s a quick video for viewing the bow in action.

Gorgeous work as always, Dave.  Those bamboo bows with the siyah curves sure grab my attention.

Regarding Glisglis's comments about kinds not being able to appreciate great work like this:  I think he's right.  I even notice it with my Badgerling, who seems more mature and appreciative than most.  Kids are trying out everything and tend not to stick with anything for too long.  But I figure with kids it's all about planting seeds, putting those good ideas in their heads.  Sometimes those seeds might not sprout until years later...but they often do.

They all look great Dave.

I’ve made a bunch of kids bows and like GlisGlis said most of them are very seldom used.

But once and awhile that one comes along that just has to sneak over to my desk and see what’s on it. Always looking when mom or dad bring them over.  And best of all . Putting down the wheels and and pulling a single string Selfbow and totally hooked on it.

They are more rare than you’d think, but if you’re observant you might notice the little signs.

I hope these find hands like that.

Hey gents.  So far I’ve got razorback (Art) in for one raffle ticket for the yew bow draw.  If anyone is interested in getting in on this draw for a good cause send me a dm and we can sort out getting your name in for the draw.

Here’s the poster.  It’s on display locally here in my home town. I will ship it to a winner if it turns out the winner is from here on pa.
