Title: black cherry for backing

i have a billet of black cherry that i could get some nice quarter sawn strips out of.  will quartersawn black cherry work ok for a backing?-Ryan

I really dont know so im not much help but i thought black cherry was weak in tension

I wouldn't use cherry as a backing- as David indicated, it's tension-weak. You would be better off using the cherry as a belly wood and backing it with really thin hickory, or something lighter like white ash or elm.

thanks guys, for some reason i thought it was better in tension and weaker in compression, but now that you said it , it makes sense,
