Title: High speed steel?
Post by: Fox on April 04, 2022, 10:54:15 pm
I have a big box of high speed steel (Im not sure what kind) that is from an old woodworking machine? im not really sure what they were used for exactly but I have lots. Can anyone tell me about "high speed steal"? Are they air hardening? Right? What could I use these for? there in great chunks for knifes and stuff

Not sure about yours but I have a couple of pieces a friend gave me, some kind of high speed steel cutter blades, I tried everything I knew to get it soft to work and never could.A friend in the club that is a machinist told me that some steel depending on the alloy it was made of, was designed where heat wouldn't effect it and that you would never get it soft, all I know for you to do is give it a try and see if it will soften so you can work it.

That's the stuff they use to cut other steels, good luck.
