Here are some pics of a bow that I recently made for a member of my black powder rendezvous club. I previously made a bow for Randy's wife and Danae asked if I would make a similar one for Randy because he was always borrowing her bow at shoots. This bow is fashioned from vine maple that I harvested from the N. Oregon coast range. The wood gave me some trouble because it kept curling into more reflex and twisting out of string alignment as I worked the belly down. My experience is that these surly vine maple staves, while being challenging to work, make fine and fast shooting bows if you can tame them. The bow is 62 inches long and pulls 50# @ 27”, so it is legal to hunt elk in Oregon, which Randy likes to do. The bow was made for rendezvous primitive class competition, so I made it to shoot off the hand. I hope you enjoy the photos.

Very nice work Gordon, he should love that. Looks like you tamed it down pretty well. ;)

Thanks for the compliment, Pappy. I don't know if I really tamed it - more like we came to an uneasy understanding ;D

That is really, really nice. I could only hope to someday build a bow close to that, but it’s not happening anytime soon.

Beautiful outcome to a challenging stave.Nice work.

Thank you all for the nice comments.
superdav95, the tips look stiff because the outer limbs have more reflex than the inner limbs. In reality the tips are carrying their fair share of load.
