Get Linen from Tandy Leather. That about as good as I’ve found. Just accept it being a rope or go fast flight.

I noticed that twisting multiple 2mm cotton strands makes decent strings for bows up to 50 lbs

You nee to get a copy of vol2 TBB and read the chapter on strings :) Very useful.
As for material don't look further than raw hemp fibers. Much stronger than anything else and very rot resistant. Easy enough to get nowadays. I;ve jusrt sent off for a few hanks.
There is a reason all ships used hemp ropes :)

Not all hemp is equal. The key with it is that you have long fibers. Best to buy a small test amount then see how it goes. Also a lot of stuff labelled as hemp isn't....or it is mixed with other fibers....There is a great supplier in England. I get hanks of raw fibers from them and am just testing some fine cord from them.
