Title: Comanche Inpsired Osage Horse Bow - 62# at 21"
Post by: organic_archer on August 12, 2021, 12:24:32 pm
Hello everyone. Been cranking out the longbows, but managed to slip in an osage Comanche Horsebow (inspired but not historical replica). I got the design inspiration from a Comanche bowyer I saw online who was carrying on the traditions passed down to him. He was making some beautiful flat-limbed bendy handle bows at about 48" length, so that's what I went with!

The rawhide backing had a really cool pattern on it that looks a lot like sacred geometry. This bow isn't being stretched to the max. Definitely could've taken it out to 23-24",  but the sub-max draw was for the peace of mind that it'll last the customer a lifetime. It came from a really nice piece of osage that had about 1" of natural reflex to start and held all of it. I'm blown away by how much power can be generated by these little things. Close-up and shooting videos on my Instagram @correyhawk for anyone who wants to see those.

Had to get this one out the door, so I didn't take too many photos. Thanks for looking! Hope you all have a great weekend.

Made quite a few of those over the years. Nice job on your bow, and arrows. Their style of quiver, and bow pouch would go nice with your bow ,and arrows.

Reminds me of something Teddy Roosevelt  was quoted as saying. He said that he'd seen an Indian using what he described as a "child sized bow" put an arrow completely through the body of an Elk.

Awesome bow. Who is the Comanche bowyer?

The rawhide has the 'end look' that I like to see for that type of backing, smooth, with character. I always enjoy seeing your work. The presentation of photos make me want to up my game in that regard.

A deadly tough little stick there.Love the natural varigated look of the rawhide on it.
Oh yes like the shafts and fletching that go with it too.
PS.....A brain tan quiver with that set up would round that set up out.

Excellent craftsmanship...Have shot and built quite a few bows in the short 40's inch category hanging around under "half eye's" tutorage...They are the pistols vs the rifles of bows...They pack a punch and take some getting used to...As said a Horse Bow, shot in close contact...That must have been a real rush! Excellent representation...

Thank you for the words of encouragement everyone. Very much appreciated!

Eastcreek- I saw several videos with the same bowyer and unfortunately they never revealed his name. He was building for the Comanche National Museum.

That’s a powerful/beautiful osage stick!  Excellent craftsmanship and finish work.
How do you like the turkey tail fletchings on your arrows?  They look amazing.  I’ve always used primary turkey wing feathers for my fletchings but I have a pile of tails I could turn into fletchings.
Thanks for posting your work here. Will

Very handsome work, love that rawhide finish.
I'll bet that punches out an arrow, nice to see a shorty at a heavy weight... good illustration of musculature used when drawing a bow.
Nice photos

Thanks Del!  (SH)

Will - tail feathers are growing on me. They grind easily and always look really clean and straight on the shafts. They're soft, but still seem to hold up great!
