I'm looking for a knife/knife style for chopping down staves to reduce them to near bow dimensions. I know I could use a hatchet for this but I think I can be much more precise with a chopping knife. I was inspired by Ryan Gill's chopping knife that he uses for bow building but I cant quite afford one as nice as his. I was thinking a shorter machete or bolo knife design with a thicker blade for under $60. I'm not sure where to look or if this is the right place for this post but thanks for any suggestions!

I was recommended a old hickory butcher knife a while back. it seems like a good knife for the price it is.

Green River butcher knife is similar to the Old Hickoery, nut slightly heavier, I think. A mid sized Bowie style may work. Often you can find knives "hidden" at flea markets and pawn shops. Or maybe work a trade here.

You could also use a basic fixed blade knife and baton it

A good small axe is a better tool for the job. You learn how to use them with use.
