Title: Bamboo backed cumaru
Post by: maitus on November 30, 2020, 10:56:18 am
Hi!
Big brake like always :). Here is my last bow I have shot already about 30 hours in bow section. Its 67" long and 1.1 inch wide. Pulls 48@26". Cumaru is cross grain. Precise shooter :).

Nice

I tried a Bamboo backed Cumaru many years ago.  It was shorter than this one in an RD style and the wood essentially folded as I brought it up to 28" of draw.  It was the strangest failure I've ever had

Really cumaru? Congratulations!
My friend and I have both tried cumaru a couple of times as belly. All exploded in early tillering phase. Since that I have used cumaru ase core only. And that’s because of I still have some of it in hand...

Thank's guys!
I have tried to make bow from cumaru before and I had a fail exactly the same way as You described. The belly just collapsed. During the tillering I was already waiting when it will happen again. I made this bow from the same peace of cumaru I used before. I'm not sure but maybe there is some point in useing the cumaru in cross grain or the cumaru wasn't dry enough when I used it first time. I have had similar collaps with oak as well and in this case I know the wood wasn't yet dry.

To maitus: Nope, no iroco in my hands (yet). Woods I´ve been rasping to bows: bulletwood, hickory, ipe, oasge, lemonwood, oak, cumaru, ash, rowan, purpleheart, apple, Finnish juniper and one grass; bamboo...  :D

Good job! All the cumaru I have tried cyrsaled badly early in the tillering process.
