Post by: Fox on June 11, 2020, 09:04:03 pm
I know there is a few threads about this already out there but they didn't quite answer my  questions.... I know apple checks real bad, and ive got a few pretty big apple logs that i should be able to quarter. so the ends are painted... now what? should i split them? peel the bark and seal the back? or ruff them out? whadya people think? thanks

How large are the logs?

If you take the bark off, you must reseal it with glue.

Apple checks when left in large sections.

I like to rough out wood that has a tendency to check badly and then seal it for drying. Seems to be working really well for my ocean spray. They are drying fast and free of checks when I do this

How large are the logs?

They are about 10" so a pretty good sized log for Apple atleast.

Definitely split them down.
Rough out a bow, leave the bark on if possible. Then seal very, very well, strap to a board to prevent warpage and cross your fingers!
You want to leave them somewhere shady, with little air movement and cool.
Once they have lost a decent bit of moisture, reduce to floor tiller and allow to season fully. It will take a few years. Apple is funny stuff but well seasoned it is very good.
