Title: Length for maple board bow?
Post by: Sammakesbows on June 11, 2020, 12:08:31 am
Im aiming for about 45-50 pounds. It is currently about 6.2 feet long, and i am planning on a mollegabet design, though it will probably have rather short outer limbs. How short can i make it? the main bending section is parallel, and tapers into the levers.

How short you go depends on how wide the working sections of the stave are.

I would keep it as long as you got at first. I would make the handle section rather long, say 10 inch; make the flat working sections at least 2.5 inch wide and at least 16 inch long. The lever sections should be at least 1/2 inch thick and can be almost as long as the working sections. You can cut the levers shorter at the first sign of any set.

The working limbs are 25 inches and are 1 3/4 inches wide.

That would make it more like an American Flat Bow. If you want, you can make the lever longer than usual, say almost 10 inches. And that could be called a Mollegabet style bow, I guess. Good luck.
