Title: A little somethin
Post by: Mesophilic on June 10, 2020, 03:19:38 pm
This one is thin stock AEB-L, 4.5" blade, 8.5" OAL.

Handle is shokwood bolsters with stabilized flame maple, red and blue liners.

Sorry for the lesser quality camera phone pics, I'll take pics with the Nikon after I get a sheath figured out.

That is a pretty and functional looking knife.

Thanks, guys.  This is my first time making a non-kitchen knife from AEB-L, looking forward to seeing how it does on non food related tasks.

Thanks guys.  Haven't checked back in this subforum for a little bit.

I still haven't decided on a sheath design yet.  Just been carrying it in my pack in a duck tape and cardboard blade guard.  Been using it for the last month to dress squirrels and a couple of rabbits, even used it for breaking down part of my bear.

I'm really liking this AEB-L steel.  It doesn't keep a scary sharp edge like more modern auper steels, but so far it only takes me 30 seconds on a paddle strop with diamond paste, and 30 seconds with green compound and it's back to shaving sharp.  Hasn't suffered any chips or rolling of the edge on bones (mostly squirrel bones just to keep in perspective).

At some point I'm going to do some larger hunting and skinning knives from AEB-L and see how it holds up to elk.

I'm not familiar with the steel nomenclature, but that is very nice!  Right now, my knives are going to outlive me by a long shot -  "they"may take away my "totin' chip" eventually (lol) >:D!  I'd try to work a trade for one of those!

I'm not familiar with the steel nomenclature, but that is very nice!

Snipped this from another site rather than trying to type it myself:

Quote
AEB-L is non-powder stainless steel made by the European @Bohler famous for its corrosion resistance, hardness, and ease of sharpness (And the combination of hardness and ease of sharpness that makes it special compared to other steels). It was originally made for razor blades, and today it’s used in the knife industry and scalpel blades.

I've got 20 hunters and outdoors knives in 52100 off at the heat treaters now.  If I can recoup my investment then my next run of knives will be some hunters and kitchen knives in AEB-L and/or Nitro V (which is AEB-L with added Nitrogen for edge retention).  It might be a while but I'll let you know when that day comes.
