Title: Elderberry stick with warts 48/26“ (No. 111)
Post by: simson on April 07, 2020, 12:54:00 am
The third bow in the bendy handle row. Not much to say, just a stick with slightly rounded belly. The back is dyed with ironchloride, tips are buffalo, The handle wrap is a 2 ply twisted cord made from paper (!) (found it at IKEA). This bow has three cluster pins on the back, one was unavoidable laying in the handle. the pins got filed down, some leather under the wrap made a good transition to the pins.

Not steamed, not heat treated, just a bit heat corrections for string alignment.

Nice... Lovely wood to work Elder. I like the subtle figure on the side of the limb at the tip.
I find it difficult to find a long straight bit that's thick enough round here.
Have you tried rubbing garlic on the warts to get rid of 'em? >:D ;)
Del :)

that's a lovely bow Simon, out of curiosity, how mich reflex did the stave have prior to tillering?

That´s a very nice "Holler" bow and the draw curve is very good too!
I´ve got a question about the wood. I´ve heard that elder doesn´t steam bend well. Someone told me that it jumps back after unclambing. What are your experiences there?

Yep, most of them are twisted like hell. This one was an exceptional. I will try that garlic thing - if the bow gets stinky you have to visit for cleaning her up!  8) 8) 8)

Lost 1.5" during tillering, this wood has a tendancy to set. That's the reason why I went with 26" drawlength.

sevus, I don't steam with the pan&foil method. IMO a steamer works better (highre temp, and better control), I've built two. One out of 'Einweckautomat' and some pvc pipes. So maybe it's my equipment, I cannot say having problems. But I haven't made sharp bendings, like for statics so far on this wood.

Dude your work is amazing.  That tiller is flawless

Tried to hit the circle on this one ...

Thanks for your nice words Gents!

With a curve like that, those warts just look fine. ;)

hey lonbow, I steamed some deflex into a stave with the boil and foil method and it held most of it.

Thanks Simon, good to know

Mike, do some testing before applying to the bow, that dye creates a different color on different woods!
I like it very much, because it looks always very'natural'.
