Title: Forged broadheads
Post by: Handforged on March 09, 2020, 02:16:45 pm
I make these from time to time at the forge, I call them a bodkin plus. These are forged from 52100 round bar stock, heat treated and tempered to take an edge like a razor blade but they are stout enough to shoot through a brick wall. I decided to make another half dozen of these today and thought you folks might appreciate a pic. It's a relatively simple design that just works.

So far I have taken mule deer, elk and black bear with these.

Looks good, and stout enough to get the job done.

What's the weight on these?

I don't know why other blacksmiths don't make them. I imagine because they are small and somewhat intricate to forge out and consistency piece to piece is important. Most don't want the bother I guess.

Those are some seriously heavy duty points you make.  :OK
The late Mike Ameling was a blacksmith and living history enthusiast who was famous for his fire steels and simple knives. He also made simple trade points once in a while. I had some till some hooligan stole them from my display at an event that I used to demonstrate primitive archery at.  :(

Thanks, like most things I make, I work on it until I can't tear it up. I figured if I couldn't break these doing ridiculous things no one else had a chance. I usually only make a half dozen when I loose the last half dozen. It does take time to get them right but I wouldn't hesitate to use them on any sort of game. Even the kind that can fight back.

I need to get some new shafts and I will mount a few up and post pictures. As it is hunting season is a long ways away so I had not given much thought to it honestly.
