Hello all, I’ve been a lurker for years, but decided that I’d like to participate in the bow swap this year so I am fulfilling the requirements by posting a bow I completed recently. I have been making bows (mainly board bows, but also plenty from staves) since about 1990. I quit building bows in 2006 to finish grad school and raise a family. Now, 14 years later, I’ve started again because I just missed it too much.

This bow is hickory from a lumberyard with a bamboo back glued up into 2” of Perry reflex using TB2 for glue. The riser and tips are bocote and the finish is deer skin and tung oil. It pulls 53#@27” and holds an inch of just unbraced reflex. Was finally warm enough to shoot it outside last week. I’ve got two more essentially identical bows in the works for my boys. One is 54” and one is 50” long. They’re 8 and 11 years old. The one for the 11 year old has kept all of its original Perry reflex after being broken in. Boo and hickory is a great combination.
Thanks!
Matt

Heck yeah, very good looking bend. Nice bow, nice post. I'm with Brian on the knapping question. Where abouts are ya? Welcome to PA.

I don’t knap as much as I’d like to, but I do whenever there is time. Most of my knapping is concentrated on replication of paleoIndian point types and on understanding various sources of chert. Here is a hunting point I made recently. I see there is a knapping forum here, but haven’t checked it out yet.

Great job on your bow and the hunting point. Welcome to PA. Definitely would like to see more of your work.

Nice bow! I’ve been wanting to try a boo backed bow. I’m just frugal and don’t feel like buying a bamboo backing strip haha

I would highly recommend giving it a shot....the level of performance you can get by gluing in reflex is just amazing, plus it opens up all sorts of lumberyard finds for bow making and I like that too. I find that a large belt sander (I use 6x48) is extremely helpful in flattening the boo, which is vital to the whole process. Not sure if I like boo better for bows or fly rods 🤔😄
