Here's a Black locust recurve I just finished up. Its 66" ntn 1 3/4" wide at the fades and straight tapers to 3/8" nocks. It was a bit of a character stave, not side to side, but front to back. It had three large bumps to deal with the center one I took advantage of and made a cool reverse style handle. The other two I tried to remove the best I could with heat. The one in the lower limb is now almost unnoticeble, the one in the top limb is more pronouced. It is backed with western diamond back rattle snake skins, and has a deer leather grip and deer antler tips. It pulls around 50#@28" I havent reweighed it since finshing it but its pretty close to 50#. I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out, and I realy like the way it shoots. Hope you enjoy!

what a cool bow! love that handle. great job ryan.
-
Very nice static tip recurve. Love the sexy handle.
How did you like the black locust? Compare favorably to osage for you?
-
Thanks Lennie and Marius.
Lennie, its good wood but its not as forgiving as osage.
-
Great looking bow Ryan, lots of character and very distinct design. Steve
-
Awsome ! I love the handle too !! Need to get me some BL.
John
-
Thanks guys.
Here's a shot of the stave as I was working it down.

Tailor made for that handle. Do you think a guy could glue on a piece on the back of a normal stave and get that deep of a grip?
Did the BL take more set than osage? Just wondering what aspect was less forgiving. The stuff I've used in backed bows is slightly lower density than osage, but it worked about the same otherwise.
-
Lennie, I've just had problems with it in the past. If you over stress it to much in any one little spot durring tillering it will fret on the belly. This piece held reflex great, maybe not quite as much as osage would but close. Oh, and yes I think you probally could glue a riser on the back of a bow as long as it doesnt bend passed the fades at all. I've done simalar handles by leaving extra rings of sapwood on the back of the handle area.
-
Great looking bow. Love the handle. I've been trying to find a piece of Osage with a handle like that.

-
Thanks everyone.
Ryan, Thanks buddy but there's a lot of great bows this month, I guess we'll have to wait and see.
-
Great looking bow Ryan. I never thought of putting the extra length of rattler skin on the belly. Great job. Justin
-
Very sweet Ryan, I really like how you used that knot for the handle.
-
Everyone already said what I was gonna say :( Great bow ryan :)
-
Quite the bow. Very distinctive handle. The ol' full draw will nail this one for April Self Bow of the Month consideration.
-
Nice looking Pennsy black locust. Cool handle. I wish tha stuff grew like hickory and ash.
Dave
-
very sweet bow man. How does she shoot? hand shock ?
-
Cool looking bow Ryan
-
wish my comp. was working so i could see this beautful bow ive been hearing about ;D
-
Thanks for all the complements guys! ;D
Justin, ya I always try to do that if I have enough extra skin to do it. I think it makes it look sharp.
Eddie, eversince I split that stave out 2 or 3 years ago Ive been planning on using the knot for handle like that, /i like the way it turned out.
Dave, ya I hear ya. Its easy enough to find nice straight clean elm here though which I rate as good or bettter tha BL.
Redwasp, no handshock what so ever, I know its kinda long for a recurve but the static tips are so narrow that I don't think the they really add much if any mass.
-
Great looking bow. Nice job on the finishing details.
-
Beautiful bow!! I really like how you took advantage of the wood you had, and made the most of the character in it.
-
Can ya all say sweeeeet! Thats great, super job the tips are well done.
VB
-
Thank you so much guys, I'm glad ya'll like it. ;D
-
Ryan 'ol pal, you've done it again! That baby is SWEEEEEET!
Of course, I expect nothing less from you.
You gonna sell it, or can I expect to shoot it in a few days?
Oh BTW, that mystery wood I sent you was called Dark Red Meranti.

-
Thanks Guys.
Shannon, na I don't expect to sell it. At least not by then anyways, looking forward to see ya'll. Meranti ? ah, still don't know what that is.....lol. ;D
Pat, I've had bad luck with it in the past some as well but I've also made a few exceptional bows from it. I think the key is to slightly over build with it and tiller very slowly because it will fret at any slight hint of a hinge.
Hillbilly, ;D thats funny.
-
now i see er. looks great really like that. ;D
-
That's a good looking bow Ryan...although from what I've seen you loss your capability to make a bad bow long before I ever knew you. :)
-
Great bow! BL is definitely a little less forgiving with mistakes made during tillering than others. Really cool to see you utilize the characteristics of the stave in the design.
Tracy
-
WOW!!! That is one sweet bow!
-
Hmmm-still no Full Draw.
-
That's a great looking bow Ryan! BL is a personal favorite of mine, I love the stuff. That handle looks great and those tips are very nice.

-
That conifer made a great background for your full draw. Super candidate bow for April Self BOM. Thanks.
-
Man o man, that is sweet..the glue line angle on your tips border insanity...I LOVE IT...what kind of glue on those tips? Bringing her to the Classic I hope?....Brian
-
i love that bow :)
-
Thanks old bow. It did work out pretty good.
Brian, insanity? Why? The string actualy pushes the two piece of wood together at the angle I cut it at. Plus the tips are static so there's no reason to think it wouldnt hold just fine, several others on this site have been doing there tips like that before me, thats were I got the idea. I used super glue to glue them on.
Thanks David.
-
Might purty bow there Ryan!
