Title: Persimmon bendy 50# at 25”
Post by: Mo_coon-catcher on May 31, 2019, 06:28:08 am
Here’s a little bendy handle persimmon bow I built for my jiujitsu teacher. I had built him a black locust bow that snapped right before giving it to him. So I feel this is a good one to take its place. I’ve already given the bow to him so I’m going off memory for te dimensions. It pulls a touch over 50# at a 25” draw. And is smooth, quick and quiet at the shot. I’m prettty sure it’s about 53” between the nocks (can’t remember if it’s 52 or 54”, so went te middle). The 4” handle section is 1 1/8” wide going to 1 3/8” from fade to midlimb then tapering to 3/8” nocks. The overlays are what I’m pretty sure is leopard wood, either way I like how it looks with the persimmon. I learned that persimmon bends well with dry heat and takes a heat treat well. I flipped the tips, corrected about 1” of sideways bend and pulled in about 1” reflex, which pulled out leaving it flat between the handle and nocks, with a bit of wiggle from the natural curving plus the flipped tips. And it bent very easy. I left a bit of cambium for that splotchy look on the back. I love how this wood has streaks of color running through it. Overall it’s a grayish brown wood, with good dark patches running down it and streaks of green and purple Hughes. This wood is slowly becoming a favorite of mine to work.

Thanks for looking,
Kyle

Nice work. I am 0 for 2 on persimmon. Our native persimmon is short and knarly. Both I have tried were with high crowned saplings. Too short I think. I will get one from it. Nice work!

Super cool!  I still haven't tried making a bow from a fruit tree.

Nice bow Kyle. I'm thinking your jiujitsu instructor will like it.

That's some cool looking wood. Nice bow. Had to look up what persimmon is, think I'm just a bit north of its natural range.

Love it!
Beautiful colors here and nice profiles too.
Would like to hear what mass that stick has.
Good draw weight for that little bow.

Nice bow! I don't see people play with Persimmon often so great job for going for something non-standard!!
I think I saw a nice big persimmon tree on my hike yesterday (not for bow wood, the trunk was probably 2' in diameter!!), was good to see I don't see many of those around here (SW Virginia).
