For the ones that do not use a string jig, how do you measure your layout of your flemish string to get the right length? I have a jig, but just wondering how to measure it without one? Is there a formula or rule of thumb for lengt to start with?

I measure with thumb tacks. Say you need a 60" string, i add 10" for each loop wich would give you 80" total. Put you'r thumb tacks or nails 40" apart and wrap however many times you want for you'r bundle.
Works for me.

I take the string that I use for tillering adjust the lenght so that tht bow is on brace height. Then I add 22" to the length of the tillering string and I have the lenght of the threads. From this threads I make a flemish string with two loops.

I just wind the thread around two nails. For a longbow with FF+ the distance between the nails is the ntn length + 15".

I use bow length plus 20", you can use bow length plus 18" with small loops. Steve
