Title: Some New work and One for Shannon aka Sawfiller
Post by: wvfknapper on March 26, 2008, 10:27:27 pm
Well I have been enjoying this warm 70+ weather the last couple days and decided to make some chips fly (no heat in my little shop so not much chipping through the winter) Here are some pics of a few ,, The brown corner notch is Knife River flint, the one with the bullseye is Dolphite agate, the Obsidian blade is silver sheen , the black corner notch is basalt, the dovetail is Texas flint, the KILLER  ;D brown blade is going to Sawfiller for the stave he traded me, it is knapped from some type of flint that Mark Bracken sales, Thanks saw and sorry for the wait............The last point is a hafted point made from Burlington, sinew wrap and a heavy pine pitch coating,,,,,,,I will take some of the pitch off later.

Robert, wow! nice chippin'-you're gonna give me an inferiority complex  ;D. I'm with Eddie, the brown blade looks like Coastal Plains chert. You need to come down to the TN Classic and give us some lessons.

Thanks everyone for the comments,, it's a hobby that I really enjoy and push myself to make a nice piece of art...... I have a 5 gallon bucket of rejects I have thrown back over the years .

Yank, That flint will spoil, you better send it to me  ;)

Hillbilly, I Wish I could make it to the Classic, but work keeps me from going............It could be coastal plains, he had a few different color of it , some of it wasn't heated enough and this piece could have used a little more heat but will make a more durable blade.

Fletcha, To get the good close up images I use a dowel rod sharpened on one end , push it in the ground and place the point on top of the dowel ,, select macro on your camera, have a good natural lighting source  and shoot away................Macro really means a lot when taking close up images as does natural lighting.

Robert, the translucent coastal Plains doesn't need heat treating. The grainy stuff with the dark swirls does need a little.
