Title: Potential Rocks?
Post by: Ryan Jacob on March 16, 2018, 04:18:08 am
So here in the Philippines, after a quick google search, It seems that our most abundant rocks are dacite, basalt, and quartzite. Are any of these any good or atleast after heat treating?

Yes sir, Dacite is your best bet and then Quartzite. Basalt is grainy and like hitting concrete.

beware- different people use the word "dacite" differently- flintknappers use dacite to refer to rock that's like obsidian (some say it IS obsidian), while everyone else uses "dacite" for a whole class of volcanic rocks which are not good for knapping. If you can find a local museum with points, you may get some ideas...

I’ll see what I can do, though, there isn’t much flintknapping history here...

You mentioned the native tribes in another post - you may have an excellent source of info there!

If it is dacite you don't have to heat treat it.
