Title: Taters first wood bow.
Post by: Morgan on February 28, 2018, 03:40:16 pm
Made my 8 year old son his first wooden bow.
Split from a 3 1/2” diameter tree. Split tree in half and used a tip from here and split the half from middle out on one of the halves. I can make another like this and one with a thicker handle with what’s left.
Bow is 47” long, about an inch wide through most of it except where the grain made it a bit more narrow. Tapers last 6” or so to the tips. Stave was really wonkey, had a dog leg in one limb and a ton of side bow. Steamed a lot of it out but the side profile looks crooked as all get out. Tillered to 20# @ 20”. He ain’t there yet but maybe he can shoot it for a couple years before he outgrows it.

would be nice to make a few smaller sized arrows, with the right spine. would shoot much better from that nice little bow.

Thanks folks. I want to get him some arrows spined and cut for it, probably use cane if I can find some that will spine right, if I can’t ill try to find some fiberglass arrows. Light spined wood arrows scare me, don’t want him to get a shard through his arm.

I made some small arrows for my cousins once from bamboo from the hardware store. You can striaghten it over the stove.

Nice bow!  He should have a lot of fun with that.  He'll be the envy of a lot of kids with that bow his Dad made just for him.  He does have a good form!
