I am getting ready to put together a new forge. Starting to collect the parts for the burners and such. When I'm ready would anyone be interested in a build a long? it will all be home built. If so I will take pics as I go
-
Yes, we need a build-a-long. What type of burners are you using?
-
Yes, been waiting for one. (-P (-P

I would love a build along. This is something I plan to tackle at some point so it would be most appreciated.

I would be very interested.

Gonna do a double or single burner????

I’m watching!

Brice I want to do a double burner, but I am also going to make a quick single to use till I get this built
-
I'll follow along on a Build Along :OK ! Bob

Yep love to see it, I am supposed to be getting an old one from and friend [ Was his Grand Fathers] but so far he hasn't showed up with it , so I may try building one myself , would love to get some ideas from you build along. ;)

Yes!

I am in!

Well I got a simple burner put together, but I still need to get a 30# propane regulator before I do the build. I'm working on it
-
Probably be able to find one at an rv parts store. Usually they have 2 ports, but you can plug one. I will look in the garage tomorrow, I may have one that is a single port from an rv. Be glad to send it to you.

It needs to be an adjustable one to fine tune the pressure hawk. I have just been busy trying to finish up a few projects, but if ya got one I'll take it lol
-
Didn't know they were adjustable. The two I found don't have any noticeable adjustment. I always thought the adjusting was done with the control valve. They are both from rv's that used 30 lb. bottles, as far as I know. A guy who works with propane told me the regulators were all calibrated to handle either 20 or 30 # bottles, though.

This is a farriers rasp knife I made for a trade. It is a sygan dubh Scottish, or my interpretation of one anyway😁 the handle is some black walnut stained with an ebony stain. Two piece handle and hidden tang. I got a hold of a Scottish issue schilling coin and inlayed it in the handle. For heat treat always take a piece of the tang when using a file and heat it to non magnetic and then about two mins past and quench in oil, then hit it with a hammer, it will break if it just bends it didn't harden. If not hard go through the same process and quench in water if it won't break it won't harden properly and find another use for it. With these rasps I have found a 2 sec water quench then straight to the oil is a safe method that hardened

I double posted the coin I guess

I did some file work on the spine too
-
Very impressive work Bubby
-
Very Nice Bub!
-
That spine work looks pretty good! I forged a few blades from files before, I could never get a hole drilled through though! Fire crew had a bucket full of worn out files and most were Nicholson’s.

Did you anneal them first? I build a good sized fire and toss some files in the bed of coals. The next day they are soft enough to bend by hand. They will drill easily then.

Fwiw use a regulator for a turkey fryer.
They are adjustable from 0-30 #s working pressure
Don't matter what size propane cylinder from 5#to 100 # cylinder.
Very nice dagger.
-
Thanks Kevin, I happen to have one of those
-
I had a small propane forge with a single burner. I think my issue was I never let them sit in there. Soon as they hit forging color I’d start hammering. Or my drill bits suck.. haha
-
I will have to look at the one for my fryer - right now it is "in service" on my tent stove >:D -C- (=)! Keeps the tent warm! And provides a cooking surface, too. Up to 145k? Btus!

Here is a short video of the test run on my single burner. I had red hot steel very fast, the makeshift forge is just that, makeshift. Time to start that build and I will have pics. This burner was simply a 10" x 1" black pipe, a quart inch nipple and cap, and a .035 welding nipple for a wire feed. I drilled a bunch of holes for air flow to create a Venturi pretty simple and I will post pics shortly
