Title: Life is Good (Up in The Northwest)
Post by: Keenan on March 24, 2008, 01:06:51 pm
Due to Pappy's inspiring thread of sharing life and good memories with friends while passing on a legacy of primitive skills, Some of us  Northwest primitives would like to share as well. ;)
This was the start of the Glass butte nappin. Juniper Junky picked me up on Thursday and the journey began. You should have seen the looks that we got while heading out of town. ;D
First day was quiet as peolpe started to filter in the area. These first pics are the rig heading out and our home for the next few days. ;D  To say that Dave's teepee is nice is an understatement. Something fairly magical  about looking of at the poles and horse hair against the setting skies.   ;)  Keenan

Here is what we woke to the first morning.  The second pic is Dave's amasing skills of starting a fire with alot of hot air. >:D :D  The best part of the morning, Coffee pot on the fire, and a taste of the things to come. Gold sheen obsidian, and so much more.   Keenan

The snow drifts proved no problem for Dave's Bronco. And once you get up on top the view is incredible as you wander around on pure glass and search for biger nodes to dig up, ;D

This thread wouldn't be complete without some good northern style grits involved.  JJ brought some chucker that he had killed for one of the dinners and topped off with fried potatoes we were happy campers. ;)
Morning in the teepee brought sausage and eggs, We noticed Dtiller's real good for breaking your eggs.

By Saturday the ravine was getting lined with teepees. Saturday evening the famous Emory C. gave us the most incredible display of a skilled magician dicecting a big bolder to romove the prize inside. With every stroke of his 30 lb, chunk of copper he popped off huge spalls with almost no waist at all.  In a matter of minutes he had released this nice 20.5" blade from within the rock that we had. The crowd watch in amasement and we realized we had just wittnessed one of the best that there is in the world of napping.  ;D ;D

The weekend was a real treat, More then anything getting to spend some time with JJ and Dtiller was all that I hoped it would be. They are both great guys. and both very skilled. They kicked out some beautifull points blades and bifaces that would make any pround and the bows were a treat to see as well.
I didn't get a chance to shoot with Tiller (seemed the rock kept calling to him) but I did get to go shoot with JJ and between the two of us the birds and other critters stayed fairly safe, >:(  Keenan

Keenan, Dave! I sure as heck was wondering for the first 100 miles why when I turned on the heater in the car it sure smelled SWEET!!!  :o  Took a real cute waitress at the local coffee shop in Bend to point out that I had three cow patties sticking out the front of my car. I was starting to worry why the waitress kept gigling as they passed my table!!  ;D (I knew it had to be you two!)  Just you wait till next year!!!  >:D

Great time guys! Cant wait till we can all get together again and practice our skills.  If you ever get to meet Keenan and Juniper Junkie dont miss that chance. Great bunch of guys! (But, watch out for them when there are cow patties arround!  ;D )

If anyone can get to this event some time it is a hoot! Mick another great knapper and Holly his wife showed up just as we were all leaving. He even brought his bagpipes! Can you imagine waking up in the morning to "Amaizing Grace" piped out over the desert as the sun rises? Yep! Thats Mick!   ;D

you're just lucky your car was locked! >:D >:D it would have took you a while to find it with all that rock and stuff you had in there. ;D I had a great time and will look forward to next year. be sure and not let those folks down south know how much rock you got before the classic, they may expect you to bring some down. so it will just be our little secret ;) was able to get a good nights sleep and not listen to Keenans snoring :D. sorry I had to cut it short a day, but work had to get done.

Hey David, Glad ya made it home ok. JJ and I were chuckling all the way home but you should have seen the look on his face when I told him that I screwed up and left our big blade at the camp site. :D >:D But i couldn't keep a straight face very long. ::)
David you made my wifes year with all that soap you gave us. She's still smelling the different types and says I can go again next year if ya bring some more down ;D ;D ;D However I know her well and Im sure she'll be on your site ordering more.
JJ cant say enough about how much fun that was. Guys if you ever get a chance to go 4 wheeling with JJ through the snow and over the hills just keep in mind how many projectals are behind the seat. ;D Oh ya for the record I only snor if I get on my back but they both snore at random, :P     Keenan

Nu-Uhn! Keenan we know better! You were just wakin yourself up!!!  ;D

Glad she liked the soap. Now I just need to get her hooked on the lotions! Ooooh! The pocket book is goin ta be hurtin!!!  >:D ;D >:D Seriously though, I would have  just given it to you both for free. But I sure love those syringa shafts Dave gave me and that wonderfull Elm stave and boo backing Keenan! Thanks! Made my vacation!  ;D  Tell your wife that I will have a bunch more ready for next years event. (Its all set now. You have the excuse to be out there next year!)

Wish I could have seen Dave's face when ya pulled that one on him! The expresion on his face must have been pricless!  :o ;D

Four weeling was a bunch of fun in the Bronco! Keenan, you missed see that heard of Mule deer when JJ and I went out the second time on Saturday and you went out stump shooting. Must have been somethin arround 14-20 deer all together moving through the Sage and Juniper.  We just could not bring ourselves to mention it to you when you told us you where busted while bunny busting.  ;)

Now riding in the front seat of Daves Bronco may be dangerous with all those projecile points but you should have tried sitting on top of them while we bounced over the Buttes! Still pulling fragments of obsidian out of me bum!  :'( (Nah! no fragments but it was exciting!!!)

What a great time! I cant wait to get the pictures off my cell phone and post them on the web!

I'm really looking forward to Gordons rendavous coming up in june and maybe some of his gang will post up some of the fun. JJ and I are trying to put one together here in Central Oregon as well and we will try to add more to this thread of the weekly stuff.
Gordon and Gang this is a challenge for you boys to step up and share your excursions as well.

I love being in the Northwest.   I had a really good time meeting ya'll.   I'll try to not be such a stranger.  I love making primitive archery stuff, but my main focus is horseback archery.  I have already knapped some nice points from materials brought back, including a nice 2 1/2 inch golden sheen point and a 3 1/2 inch golden sheen preform.    I'll try and put some photos on here, if I can figure it out.  Here is the gold sheen point made out of the rock given to me - I didn't find any gold sheen myself.   Also a photo of some of the preforms I made.

Sorry Guys about the large photos on last post.  I am kinda new to this.  Next photos will be smaller.  Here are some new points I have made from the Glass Buttes trip.  The two large ones on left were made at camp.  The 4 1/2 inch mahogany point is going on my next Atlatl dart.    The others were made in the evenings at home this week.   Some will be hafted onto my primitive arrows with pine pitch, sinew, and hide glue.   Also, I have attached a photo of my favorite horse and I doing our thing - flinging arrows while galloping along.

Heck thats better form then I have on solid ground :D  Those points look great, and that gold sheen really shows up well. I've been hard at it on the steel fab in the shop so haven't been able to play with the wood or rocks so far this week. Maybe tonight I'll nock off early and play a little.
My wife is starting to wonder when we can take the mamoth mascot blade off the dinning room table, ??? ;D  Wonder what she'll say when I get the display case done, >:D Keenan

I've been knapping like crazy since I got home.  It's great having a bunch of obsidian again.  Keenan - The triangular point with basal notches in the lower right corner of my photo is from the same rock as your "mascot".   I had picked up some of the little leftover flakes off the ground.   Hey Little John; wish we could get together and do some horseback archery practice.   I get a little tired of practicing by myself.

Hey Guys:  Just wondering if you heard my blood curdling scream tonight.  Sceamed so loud I scared the horses.    I was in my cave (barn)tonight napping another point.  After finishing anotheer nice 2 1/2 x 1 1/2 inch point, I decided to try something larger out of some of the lizard skin spalls.   After about 45 minutes it was really looking good.  I thought I was going to make my first 6 inch spear point.  It was about 6 in x 2 1/2in x 3/8in.  Then the tip broke off - case of end shock.  Aarrgg!!!!   That lizard skin obsidian is tough to work, but this was my fault.   I am just not experienced with the bigger stuff.   However the other point looks great.   After that I went out and shot my twisted yew bow for awhile.

Allen, yes it would be fun to do horse archery with others, I am just self taught and not verry good. It seems to be more about horseman ship. I know I need to get a special horse for it as after a sescion or two my reining horse gets to taking advantage to the fact that I am dropping the reins and takes quite a bit to get him tuned back up. He pretty much goes where I am looking so I can guide with the reins dropped, looks like in your picture that your horse was trained to follow the same track each run? My worst problem is that I cant get off more than two arrows per run and the compitition calls for three and I am no good at the going away shot. I shoot mostly at a hay bale and like to do it bareback, my horse gets a bite or two when I fetch the arrows and I use the bale to help get back on as my horse ( J.B. ) is 16 hands tall.   Kenneth

So now it's the spall of the centry not just the spall of the day :o :o  Now I'm really afraid to work it ;D First I'm going to have to remember where I hid it ??? I remember wrapping it up in something so it wouldn't break and hiding it so it wouldn't migrate into someones bucket ;D  (JJ)

Little John - Yes, the horsemanship is the most important part of horseback archery.   If your horse is responding to your leg cues that is great.   If you want a straight run while shooting it helps to use a shallow rut, or path.  You can train the horse to run a straight line on the path when doing the HBA and still keep the leg cue response.   In the Kassai competitions you can shoot as many or as few arrows as you want.  To be able to shoot more arrows per run you have to practice blind nocking your arrows more and possibly slow your horse down to a slower canter.   I have shot as many as 7 arrows per run.   However, my highest HBA competition score came from shooting just 3 arrows per run.   I also have problems with the parting shot.   Need to do more stretching of the midsection to relax and twist around.   Attached is is another horseback archery photo during a Kassai USA competition.   My horse, Chikanery, really took well to this activity.  I will be at our Colyak Bowhunters annual 3D Traditional Archery Shoot all weekend, so will not be knapping or practicing horseback archery much this weekend.   I'll probably be scratching thru the bushes looking for my arrows quite a bit.

Unfortunately, I have not been able to afford a trip to Hungary.   I have been training with Todd Delle in Montana, who is leader of Kassai USA.   Todd trains with Kassai in Hungary once a year.   I can barely afford to travel around the NW.   I may have to start riding my horses to work, if gas gets too much higher.  Sometime I need to post some photos of my primitive arrows.   I am a better arrow maker than bowyer.   Too many of my self bows have failed.   I've had a lot of practice making arrows, partly because I loose or destroy so many.   I busted two arrows last night while practicing.   -- Allen

Nice pics Allen. I can do that off my 26 yr old draft horse but it's not as exciting when the will barely walk let alone gallope :D   I decided to find the spall that JJ and Tiller were razing me about and discovered it's in JJ bronco. Seems that I had hid it in the stocking hat for safety ::)  Now I'm sure that JJ going to make me beg and gravle just to get it back, ::)  Keenan

so what kind of person wears a hat with a hole in the top of it???? ??? then actually hides something "precious" in it  and leaves it in a off road vehicle ??? ??? I hate to tell you this, but I cant find your spall, did you have it wrapped in something else as well as the conehead friendly hat? I mean seriously...I have never seen a hat with a drawstring in the top of it  :o I can only imagine what the purpose of that could possibly be, maybe to let a little rain in once in a while? or maybe to get a tan on a bald spot? I guess if you get too hot it could ventilate a little, otherwise you would have to go to all the trouble of having to remove the hat, what a pain! ;D may have to post a pic or two of this hat ;D ;D

Looks like a great time-I'd like to get out to Glass Buttes one of these years. JJ, your Bronco brings back some memories. One of my hunting buddies when I was a teenager had one just like that-it was probably the best and toughest4 wheel drive I've ever driven. It would get you into places that you were afraid to come back out of :) We racked up I don't know how many thousands of miles bear and coon hunting in that thing on these old rough mountain pig trail "roads". I'd like to find one of those in decent shape.

David, dosen't look so good for sharing a car but that is ok, I just thought maybe, you never know.

Allen, be nice if we could ever get together. Would love to shoot with others, what kills me is that the big mounted get together falls right during the archery elk season. When you make your run, from what distance do you take your first shot to be able to get off three arrows? From a running horse I must be within25 yards to have a decent chance for a hit and within a couple of seconds am past the target. How far are you from the target as you pass?  Maybe I need to set up my course with two or three targets and shoot them as I come to them. Any way cant wait to get an archery horse that dosen't need to do other riding disiplines.  Kenneth

I just made it back from Glass Butte.  David, you weren't joking about the weather - it was COLD.  People were telling me it was 8 - 10 degrees in Bend, and that is a lot lower elevation.  I was sleeping fully clothed and double bagging the sleeping bags!  The five gallon water jug I brought with me never thawed the whole time I was there, but I had small water bottles I could keep in the sleeping bag with me to keep from freezing.

This was my first Knap-in.  I had a great first exposure to knapping, and gathered some obsidian - but I had to use a bar to get it off of the frozen ground...

Dave, did you meet/know Mic and Holly?  They live in Lacey, which is just a few miles from me.  Mic volunteered to give me some arrowhead knapping lessons!  Attached is a photo of part of Mic's stash he was creating while sitting close to the fire.

Hey Keith! Yep! I know both Mic and Holly. I saw them come in and join us the day I had to leave on Sunday evening. Mic is a kick and Holly is a lot of fun. I'm planning on getting together with them this summer and hiking with Mic. Unfortunatly Holly busted her ankle last year and is not up to hiking.

You coming up to Whidbey Island this August for the Knapadonia knapp Inn at Joe Higins place?

Mic can really turn out the bifaces! Starting to figure out how he does it but it drives me nuts at how easily he punches them out,

The temp at the Buttes can be brutal. Amaized you got through it for a whole week! Next year I'm going to figure a way to hook up an electric blanket to a car battery!

Keith, Glad you were able to make it. Sorry we couldn't have stayed longer to meet you. You are right it can be absolutely hard core weather however it can be increddibly nice as well. When we were there the first weekend it was definately nippy at night but the days were sunny, calm and much better then expected. My first time out there about 4 years ago it was sunny and hot and worked up a sweat digging for rocks. So just keep in mind how much fun, free rock and talents that there is out there and we'll see you there next year.
Did you get to watch Emory break some rock? Or meet and drool over Steve Alley's bows ;D  Keenan

Keenan - yeah, sorry we didn't connect.  Maybe sometime when I don't have to worry about my bow snapping from the cold?   ::)  I was told Emory might come back, but he wasn't there Friday or Saturday morning.  There was a group talking about a blanket prize shoot on Saturday if the weather permitted, but I left mid morning.

David - I hope to make it to Whidbey.  I might actually have figured out how to flake an arrowhead by then if I can hook up with Mic!   Did you get Dacite while you were at Glass Butte, or something different?

Nah! Missed out on the Dacite.  I was looking for the forest green stuff but forgot where I found it arround 15 years ago when I first went out to the Buttes. Now I must go back when there is not snow on the ground and find it. Oh to have a 4x4 and cheap fuel!

Gosh, I don't know where to find the dacite or the green stuff.   However, I want to go back and dig more for silver and gold sheen the pumpkin stuff.

Hey Keenan:  While at the Colyak traditional archery shoot this weekend, I managed to knap one more addition to the Mascot Family out of the discard flakes.   It was pretty tuff concentrating with folks asking a thousand questions on knapping and primitive arrows.   Anyway here is a photo of "Mascot" little brother #2 - about 2 1/2 inch silver sheen point.

Little John:  Our standard horseback archery track is 90 meters (98 yds) long with the target array offset 9 meters (10yds) from the center of track.   Shots vary from about 50 yards to 10 yards from the targets.   A nice practice setup is to arrange 6 portable targets equally spaced along the length of track, about 10 yards out.  You can turn them for all side shots, all forward shots, all parting shots, or a combination.     --- Allen

Thanks for the compliments on the points.  However, I'm not as good on the bigger knapping stuff.   I'll put some of these new points on some primitive arrows when I get time.  I haven't finished with the "Mascot" family flakes yet.   Here is a photo of some of my primitive arrows.   Most are syringa or wild rose shafts, with wild turkey or canadian goose fletchings, Obsidian tips, and put together with deer leg sinew, hide glue , and my own ponderosa pine pitch goo.    The bottom one is one of my practice arrows with a primitive steel tip hammered out of a nail.    The top one is an example of a reed arrow: with a cattail stem main shaft, hickory foreshaft and hickory nock insert.  I've also made reed arrows out of the tall phragmites reeds.   Back when I was 12 years old in Alabama, I used to make some crude arrows using river cane, steel nail tips, and leaves for fletching.   I had forgotten about the hammered steel nail points until about 8 years ago.   They make great primitive practice points.

I haven't shot the cattail arrows very much.   However, the ones I've shot out of my 38 - 45 lb bows did pretty well.   They are light, only weighed about 260 - 290 grains, but were fast.   You should reinforce the nock and front areas of main shaft with sinew.   Also, make the cattail main shaft to your full draw length.     I have used a variety of foreshaft material including several hardwoods, syringa, and wild rose stems.   The reed arrows are typically not as durable as other shafts, but are very functional.

I often test new arrows using a slip-on rubber blunt (Bunny Buster).  Then I can decide if the arrow is OK for a permanent tip  .It works out pretty well.   I have a real odd one in my quiver.  This arrow shoots a couple feet high if you nock the arrow normal with cock feather out from handle, but if you nock it so cock feather is against the handle it shoots dead-on.     The two fletch method works pretty good using the secondary wing feathers, is relatively easy to do in a primitive setting, and only uses two feathers.

Keenan ,  I screamed again this weekend!  Did ya hear me?  I broke another big un from the lizard skin obsidian.   I don't know how y'all do it.   Every time I start getting a large blade/point thinned out and starting to look like something - IT BREAKS!  In contrast, I made seven nice arrowheads without much trouble out of irregular flakes.   Here is a photo of the broken one and the arrowheads I made this weekend.    From the left the first arrowhead is a nice 3 inch one out of the gold sheen rock y'all gave me, second is lizard skin point, third one is silver sheen out of the mascot boulder, and the others are from midnight lace obsidian.

Allen, you must see Craig Ratzits video "Caught Knapping" it goes into a ton of detail on working obsidian and larger points. Looks like and ends snap there but could be wrong. Where did you hit it? On the base by any chance? Try placing the tip against your leg when working on thin bi-faces near the ends of the peice. Also, it could have been that you where putting presure on the center of the blade and slightly flexing it when you gave it a smack.

Hope that helps!

That info that Tiller gave is good info. End snaps have ruined a few for me as well.

Thanks Keenan! Remind me of your wife's name again. I am the worst with names.

The soap recipe is one we really worked on perfecting. All natural too! Just made up 8 batches for a local in this last week. Something like 4660 small 1.2 oz bars. Pain in the neck to cut and rack for drying but good for business. The thing that makes it best is the amount of olive oil we put in it and the extra moisturizing oils.  If you think the soap is cool wait till she tries the lotions!

Hate them end snaps!  Do that allot myself. One thing I have noted is get the ends thin first before moving to the centers and getting them thin. Vibration is the killer here. Anything you can do to kill vibration without putting undue stresses on the bi-face the better. Also, platform, platform and more platform work!

Keenen, Dave, Allen you guys up for finding some of that black butter Dacite around Riley sometime? Its purdy!  ;D

Well, I am not sure what black butter dacite is, so don't know.   I do want to get back down there sometime this summer at Glass Buttes or maybe Riley.   The gold sheen sure is pretty, but it was hard to work clean - without ledges.   Thanks for the tips Tiller.  I thought I was trying to support things.   I think I hit that big blade towards the back on the side, when the tip broke off.     I remember how many arrowheads I used to break in half two years ago, but then things gradually got better.   I picked up some nice black obsidian just south of Riley once.    We named our young mustang gelding , "Riley".    I also named my little palomino mustang mare "Sheena", because she had such shiny golden hair.     ---- Allen

Those are some sharp lookin points Allen - I love em! Them biguns are a whole different critter for me. Only tips I can come up with would be - always set up a good platform below center, good support (I've been playing with the spider hold). Use all your fingers and thumb on one hand to hold the peice supporting it on all sides, usually with your pinky finger on the end oposite of the one your hitting - squeeze in to apply pressure from all side then rare back and hit it - results will vary ;D.

Those points are just for fun.   Because of the way the hunting regs are written here, I hunt with triangular points with a stem base.   Here is example of one of my hunting points.   The only hard part is getting them symmetrical, similar size, and around 125 - 145 grains in weight.

Posted this over on the bowaholics thread;

Ok I fell to temptations again.    My good buddy Juniper Junky was out of town and I had no one to turn to for help.  ???When my supplier showed up with a trailer load of premium hazelnut I lost all controll and couldn't help my self.   ::)I know, I know, now I'll have to debark seal and sort and eventially build more bows.  I know if the raw materials are roght here in plain view that it's going to be hard to resist but It was free.   ;DI didn't have any chance to run or call for help,,,,heck I was even doing the honey do list at home and the pusher showed up.

Now, my dearest friend Keenan!

Such a burden must be lifted and shared amongst ones closest friends. Please set my share of the burden aside and I will gladly lighten your load the next time we gather together to partake in our primitive brotherhood of stone and wood.

Yay! sayeth I we should be so humble but to share out the burden amongst the brethren of the holy bow! Grant upon us this divine burden so that your  guilt for having such wood may alleviate the guilt of having left your honey Do's undone and a wife irate at not having the lawn mowed and trash divested from the thine home.

Now let us pray brothers and sisters of the bow for such divine a gift being set upon one of our brethren and soon to be shared amongst us!  ;D ;D ;D ;D

Got soap? ;D ;D ;D

We'll be having fun flinging arrows, throwing hawks and knives, shooting, eating, and drinking at our local Sagebrush Freetrapper rendezvous this weekend.  We are located at Rattlesnake primitive range near Benton City,WA.   We've got a nice little archery course set up with a dozen 3D foam animals set up for guys with primitive bows.

We definitely had some weather at the Rendezvous - sleet, snow flurries, and lots of cold wind.   At times we were shooting when the sun was out and snowing at the same time.   Wasn't enough snow to stick, but it sure made things chilly.  Still had lots of fun.  It was really interesting shooting in that cold wind.   At the rende, I finally made my first 6 inch lance point without breaking it!!!  It wasn't perfect, but was still pretty excited about it.  I made it out of one of the lizard skin spalls.   Actually, I was afraid if I went any further it would break like all the others.  Traded it and another point for a custom knife.   Here is a photo.

Sorry, but I won't be able to make it to the central Oregon bowyer gathering.   I have another commitment.   Here is a photo of the knife I traded the large lizard skin blade for.    I participated in a Kassai horseback archery competition in B.C., Canada this past weekend.  I did fairly well, just one point below my highest score.  Had a fantastic time riding and shooting arrows, throwing hawks and spears, cracking the whip, knapping a few arrowheads, and sitting round the fire eating salmon and buffalo stew.   Here is one of the few arrowheads I knapped and gave away.

Finished with this large point last night.   Took me about an hour and 45 minutes from start to finish.   This was out of a nodule from the midnight lace pit.   5 7/8 inches in length.  Translucent with one diagonal black stripe.

Hey ! My wife and I are going to be running around the Northwest and western U.S. in Nov. and Dec. and I want to post some pictures and commentary on what we see.
I will post on this thread unless that ain't good ,and then I'll start a new thread.  I'll mostly be in the northwest states.
I want to cut down some tree's (For bows of course), drink some micro-brews,pick-up some rocks, take some pictures of native rock art,animals,people,etc...etc...
We will be going down to Bellingham,  Washington on the ferry from  Juneau, Alaska Nov. 4th to the 7th. There is a rock and gem show at Puyallup fairgrounds starting the day we get down there that we're gonna take in on account that there is some Knappers going at it there and I got an invite to sit in,(Maybe I will start work on Keenan's point swap point there  ::)
I am trying to get a self-bow built to take with me,and may have to finish it on the trip. I'd love to hunt a muley while I am down there !
It'll show folks around the country how things look in the northwest and may even entertain a bit.  Frank

Frank, Really looking forward to you coming down.  Big your bow, if it's not finished we can head out to the shop and do whatever. We can also rattle Juniper Junkies cage and Blacktail as well and get a few people together.
About the Muley, there is a late Blacktail hunt that is mostly on the west side of the Cascades during that time. The upper part of the state is starts Nov.22th And the southwestern is Nov.15.
Bear and cougar are open as well.

Keenan  I will have my B.L. with me on the trip.I reckon I will Have to bring some arrow materials with me as well just in case.Thank you for the invite. If I make it down there I will definitely let you know I'm down there a little ahead of time. The itinerary is pretty loose right now.
I hope to get some kinda Muley deer hunt in somewhere's, but right now it is just a hope. I just want to hunt out of the rain for a few days.See some open country and a few of my favorite deer.(At least take a few pictures of them)
Surprisingly we got Snow flurries here today, might get out for a little hunt tomorrow morning.(Sitka blacktails) This will make the brown bears start thinking seriously about going into the den.
You Tennesseans seem to be having a fine fall.I hope all continues to be good.It sure looks from the post like you guy's are having some fine times down there.I hope to make it down there sometime to meet some of you and cook you up some Halibut. Ha ! You guy's look like you could use some food.
Then yes indeed,I will post some photo's and such while on the journey.    Frank

Winter has come to Hoonah.  Three days ago it was fall. Snowed 3 or 4 inches yesterday,so went out to the hills to look for deer.
My wife (Margie Anne) saw one waay up in the top of a clearcut,so I worked my way up there to take a look, turned out to be a button buck, passed on him but he kept looking over into a patch of spruce saplings,so thought there was probably a deer in there, but it never showed.(mighta been his mamma). saw another deer in the same clear cut but it was looking at me and walked off into a alder thicket and on up into the big timber, let it go on as it was getting close to dark.I was at the bottom of the cut and he was up at the top.Our cut's are on very steep hill's here.(Everything is on steep hills here) You pull yourself up hanging on to bushes and young tree's or walking up the plunge creeks( and/or both).
Snowing again this morning, will prabably head back up there and see what is going on.
 Good day to all.  Frank

I've heard them referred to as "mossy horns". (Big muley's make me drool) I really like taking pictures of them (almost as much as perforating their lungs ! )
Okay,so this is what happened today.  Got up at 4 am  made coffee got on the computer and it was snowing good. Got off the computer and still had alot of time to kill before time to get dressed for hunting.Started chasing the ring on a stave, started getting light, snowing like mad.Kept chasing the ring started raining, did'nt ever get out of my jammies today, been working on the stave all day.Made good progress. I had the back of my stave all cleaned up but had'nt decided which ring to chase. This is the 1st time I ever chased a ring,. Man,  I thought I had loved the wood before,I did'nt know nothing, I have found true intimacy with the wood, chasing the ring. It's intense plus.
Anywho,I took a picture. I'll try to post it later.
Found some little knots under that sap wood. Cute  Anyway,it may be a hunt day tomorrow.  Frank

Sounds like a great day Frank...anyone who has never chased a ring as part of the bow making process is missing out. I think it really adds to what the finished bow means to the maker when chasing a ring, determining the layout, and really getting to know the piece of wood is involved.  :)

Cowboy    Getting dressed up here right now means putting on the long johns, wool socks and I can't stay in the house dressed like that,Margie Anne likes it about 68 degree's in here in the cold season's,so we wear what we call our comfy's,polar fleece pant's,long sleeved t-shirt,cotton socks otherwise you'll broil in your outside clothes. 25 days outa 30 you wear rubber boots(X-tra tuff's) outside,(we call them Alaska tennis shoes)  Raining today again, can't wait to get down south and out of the rain for a couple of months. When I hunt,I wear clothes that I can hunt in in the rain or wet snow and not get cold,or sweaty, under armour and micro-fleece stuff Yep,I do love to hunt in the snow Pappy,I like to track and doing it in the snow really let's you see what the critters are up to.  On sat. Margie Anne and I saw the tracks of otters, pine marten, red squirrel, deer and innumerable birds. We did'nt see any brown bear tracks, makes me believe they are in the dens a little early this year, which usually means we're going to have an early and usually long snowy winter. What few deer we have left after the winter of "06/"07{We lost 80 to 90 percnt of the herd locally) aren't recovering too good, last winter was'nt close to mild either. Will probably hunt deer on prince of wales island next year for deer, unless we get a moose or a couple of caribou next sept. Then I will go hunt a buck just to get out of the house and keep my skills's up.    Frank

Went back on sat.(This was my first knap-in ! ) Met David (D.Tiller) And banged on some rocks. Learned some technique for BIG spalling and ishi stick 101.Jim gave me a copper bopper and I got to glean the chip piles and scored some major arrow head material,Dacite (My favorite) All but ready for pressure flaking (My strong suite) What a great time.Would have liked to sit in all weekend but had to get my wife over to Tri-Cities to see her grandbaby.Sat in a goose pit yesterday afternoon and have four geese for meat and primaries.  Been a busy week. Had a big party at my buddy coach's place on sat. night.Kids, grandkids, friends, and others.Whew ! drank a half gallon of rotgut, ate elk, mule deer and goose hot off the bar-b-cuer,tater salad, various other brought out dishes, and had angels food cake and wild strawberries and whipped cream for dessert. We had a large fire down along the river and consumed more rotgut and told tall truth's.There were kids in the hot tub and dogs running around and it was quite the shindig. Up at 4:30 a.m. sunday morning to drive down to Oregon and hunt pheasants over pointers.(Head was hurting for some reason) Saw mule deer bucks with swollen necks a chasin' does, all along the drive. Shot a mess of birds and was back home by 4:00 p.m. Margie Anne and I are up in Idaho this morning, stayed the night with my sister and are driving over to missoula, mont. and point's east today.Ought to be out and under the big sky by mid-morning. Took a trip over into montana for several days.Weather started out in the 60's and up to 70 in white sulfer springs ! But we woke up at fort peck on thurs. morning and it was 9 degree's F.  Winter came in with a snowflake or two. Saw alot of beautiful country and critters. Bought a deer "B" lic. at Glasgow for a mule deer doe.Had a couple of shot oppurtunities but passed on them to take a picture instead.I been running into this problem lately of wanting to get the picture more than kill the critter.I was fairly slavering over the thought of a big, fat deer steak cooked rare over coals, salt and pepper to taste. Here's a couple of pictures of critters encountered on the trip.

Margie Anne had never seen the sage grouse before and they let us drive right up to them for a picture,Also the wild rooster pheasant let us get close, same with the barbwire buck.He was distracted by a half dozen does, was'nt paying us much attention. We walked up on some nice deer and got very close. The rut really puts them at a disadvantage as far as paying attention to predators like me.We saw hundreds of deer. We came up on a ancient kill site. The bones were totally fossilized and were washing out of a gully, that was pretty exciting and then I saw a nice flake right in there with the bone. That put me over the top.I had to call Margie Anne over to see it.She thought it was of course, way cool.I did'nt have the camera with me 'cause I was serious hunting at that point. We were miles from the rig. So,no pictures. There was alot of petrified wood there also, but none of it was agatized,so no knapping stone. One of the reason's I love that country is because it's history and pre-history is all right there to see.I love the bad lands,That is where all the cool stuff is eroding out all the time,(Dino. bones included).Lots and lots of lithic's laying around in some spots.I wanted to take pictures of some teepee rings while over there, but we went places I'd never been and did'nt stumble on any.We saw hundreds of antelope as well, but no really big bucks(Over 14") they were still pretty antsy as the season had only been over for a few weeks. We came back to Idaho yesterday to spend thanksgiving with my sisters and brother. On the road out of missoula, there was a freshly whacked whitetail doe laying a few feet off the side of the road,(A really big one) The hiway was really busy or I would have salvaged her.(Probably against the law these days) Really a shame to let her rot.We saw alot of whacked deer in the two thousand miles we've put on the van since getting here. I love deer.Just seeing them is exciting.Margie likes seeing them too so we were constantly bringing them to each others attention. She had never seen antelope either and rally liked them.  Frank

Hanging out with my friend in Benton city,Wa. Coach has a place right on the Yakima river and so I have been sitting on a bucket knapping down there for the last two days. The whole stream bank along here is an archy site. Several tribes lived up and down these banks for thousands of years.Yakima's,Wanapum's,palus(Created the Appaloosa Horse) Umatilla's,Cayuse, others. No doubt about the paleo occupation of the area,Kennewick man was found just a few miles from here. Alot of fresh water mussel shell middens and knapping flakes and fire cracked rock to be seen.My other friend,Clint came by yesterday and brought 3 chunks of glass buttes to break up and make spalls. It was good.We knapped for several hours and got a bit chilly, then coach showed up down there with a bottle of rotgut and we warmed our innards for an hour.Really benefitted from the little knap-in I attended at Puyallup fairgrounds last month. Thanks again to all them guys. The Reduction techniques I learned there are really coming in handy and I am turning out the best work ever.I've even made a couple good enough to send to Keenan (Point swap) which I will do in the next couple of days. Leave tomorrow for Long beach washington to spend dec. with Margie Anne's mom. Will be doing some renovating for her and hopfully some stave acqusitions for me.Also want to work on my BL bow and make some arrows. Been a good vacation from the rainy southeast Alaska weather.Mostly warm and dry.   Frank

HI Frank:     Glad you had a good trip and enjoyed your time along the Yakima River.   I live in the country about 8 miles from Benton City, WA.   Sorry I missed Ya.   A good friend of mine in Benton City is also involved with primitive skills, archery, and a beginning knapper.  He does a lot of the mountain man rendezvous stuff.   I am more focused on primitive archery and horseback archery .   I spend a lot of time with my horses and bows.  Let me know if you come down this way again.

Horseback archery is pretty exciting, especially on a fast horse.   It is really cool when it all comes together, when rider and horse are in synch, and actually hitting targets.   I have seen some spectators get a little bored.   However, it is ceratinly not boring for the participants.   I train pretty regularly at my place from March thru October.

OK, Frank.   I just got your message.   I was working at Sequim, on the soaking wet West side for a few days.   Been real tough traveling in the NW lately with all the road closures.   Anyway, I gave your buddy a call and left you my number and address.   Let me know when you're available and we'll knap some Obsidian.  I have lots of flakes and small nodules left over from last trip to Glass Buttes.   Got plenty of material to practice on.

Frank:

Sounds like you had a good time here in Washington.  Glad we had a chance to meet at the TRAC.   Hey, I hope you saved some of the wing feathers from the geese.   They make excellent fleathings for our primitive arrows.   I managed to collect a bunch this year from friends that hunt geese.

Allen.

Got back to Juneau,Alaska this morning and had a nice snow storm hit, just as we stepped on the beach. Welcome Home !
Well Thank you Allen; I had a good time.I will make sure to get some fresh turkey primaries to you when we get those turkey's in april.
Will be back in Hoonah on friday and probably get to work on a bow.I have to send a few things south in the mail and organize a bunch of pictures I took from the trip south.   Frank

Been back to Hoonah for a few weeks now and gotta say I did not miss the deep snow all that much. It has snowed practically every day since our return and we had about 4 feet out on the flat, until today.Raining today,so now we got a great big pile of white slop. Roads out of the village are all closed for the season. Kinda keeps ya housebound. Had my friend Capt. Erickson over a couple of nights ago and fixed him fried pheasant and gravy, rice, oven roasted butternut squash and baby, whole greenbeans (Brought over from the Juneau, costco) We like to have busted a gut.He had never had pheasant before and now wants to go kill them all and eat them. Washed it down with fine, blended rotgut.
My wife just finished her projects, freeing up the living room,so I got out a hickory stave to start carving on. D bow in the works. I still have my B.L. bow working, but took it down south with me (Never worked on it ) and it dried out a bit so I've got it laying around getting used to the climate here again. I hope to have a good working bow ready to go south with me in april to hunt turkey's with.(Maybe two ! ) I will take some pictures of this chunk of hickory when it starts looking like a bow. I also got a little project going for a buddy down south and I still have not set a knife blade that Cowboy sent me, into a handle yet. I did cut some arrow shaft shoots while down south and have them to deal with.Plenty to do for the next 2 months so I reckon it don't matter what the weathers doing.
I heard at the post office today that some of the guys are catching winter king salmon out in front of town right now,so may have to go do a bit of trolling.(Them winter kings taste awfully good this time of year). Bar-b-cue grill has a couple of feet of Wet snow on it right now,I'd dig it out to cook a fresh fish though. Good winter to you.   Frank
