I've done quite a few knotty Yew bows and I don't remember running into this. Usually the grain runs around knots like water around a rock but on this one the grain comes up the trunk and just continues on out the branch. Probably because it was a live branch. How short can I cut this stump. The end of the stump is 3/8"x 1/2" and it's going to be mid limb. I realise that Yew Is forgiving of this stuff but I thought i would ask.

With those ive just rounded them off at the end and left it .

I made an osage bow like that once, that area ended up shaped like a woman's breast, and it lasted a long time. Jes sayin :)

I did some thinking and careful measuring. Changed the design to an ELB. Did some careful bandsawing and left the knot on the shop floor. I'll have to do a little steaming because the reflex it had before turned into a bit of a sideways bend.

Interesting question DC. I'd love to hear what Del and/or Goat has to say on the subject... (-P

I'd just keep rasping off the edges/corners until it looks like it's not sticking up too much, but isn't extending too far back (left in the pic) . Little at a time and you can see what the heart wood is doing.
Tricky one...

Something about here?

Round her off and make that spot pretty and continue on. On the belly side spoon it out a bit to take a little bend and reduce some limb weight and get er' shoot'n

Here's some pictures of what I ended up with after trimming and steaming, a little blurry but there is no knots on the back. Sometimes it pays to take another look. I still thank you for the suggestions, I'll use them on another stave.

Now that's the best way to deal with knots! ;D
Always makes me laugh when people ask how long it takes to make a bow.
I explain that just looking at a log working out where to lay out the bow can hours, day or weeks of thinking and messing about!
