Title: Stringer nocks
Post by: DC on October 28, 2017, 02:41:19 pm
When you are making a nock to use a stringer and want to have a single nock rather than two do you shape the nock so that the stringer part is deeper or the string part deeper? Do you leave a bit of a lump in the middle?

I'm not sure I understand your question, except to say I actually only do a double nock (only on the top, stringer loop can lay over the bowstring on bottom nock).  That said, the top stringer nock is "barely there".  Just enough of a groove on the surface, not sides of tip, for the string to grab .  Doesn't need to be nearly as deep as a regular groove and is much prettier that way.

If you had a single nock it seems like it would prevent the real string from seating correctly and give you trouble removing the stringer to boot.

I just seem to remember the top nock looking like two nocks cut into one groove, if that makes any sense.

 I'm sure that's just an individual variation.

Should one attempt to make such top shallow groove on self bow without tip reinforcements?

Horn nocks.
I do two grooves on the upper limb and one bigger groove on the lower limb.
The big grooves started off as two grooves cut right next to each other with a tile saw, then enlarged with a small chainsaw file and the 'hump' inbetween them reduced down to almost nothing. Go good on the upper limb tho.
It works perfectly.

+1
Here's the last bottom nock I did
(But some times I'll have 2 grooves in the bottom nock too)

Top nock, make it a double;

Bottom nock, make it wider to accommodate the stringer and the string;
