Most of you know who you are (some may even be tired of waiting), some will be surprised . Not all are on this forum. Most everyone knows I make Turkey Wing Bone calls, and most know I do not sell them. Most do know that I do donate them to auctions, drives, raffles, etc., trade them for "things" I want/need, and surprise deserving friends with one, from time to time ;) . Since mid-winter there has been a lot of that sort of thing (auctions and trades, etc.) going on - :o and this ol' hoss got way further behind than I like to get in anything in my life. I also have been taking up new crafts/hobbies (arrows, bows, knives) and I have had to do those things as I have the materials and information (freely given) at hand - before I forget how - ::)
All this to say - Take Heart, recipients! I now am caught up on all the building I have planned, at this time, (God, please don't let me have forgotten anyone) on TWB Calls and am actually ready to do the "Personalizing and Decorating". I hope to have that all done, and start mailing them out, with in the next week or two.
Here on Primitive Archer, this post also gives me a chance to show another (primitive?) thing I do - for the first time (for many of you, but not all).
Pics taken today 03/18/08:

Thanks for bearing with me, all of you wonderful friends and folks - I mean it. Bless you all, bless us all.

nice calls i like them.
how do they work?
-
What do you use where they fit together to seal the?
Nice work

Thanks, David and WV. I use super glue gell first - to assemble and test/tune but the stuff you see is an epoxy putty. i usually use one they call Plumber's Putty (in a light gray like a couple of those)), or the one I prefer is kinda for wood and is a light tan. However right lately all I can find is this one (locally) that is blue outside and after you knead it it remains a sort of blue or at least cool grey. The stuff comes in a plastic see- through sleeve and is usually found with adhesives in WallyWorld or hardwares, It has another soft plastic wrap inside the tube and has an outer putty and an inner core of it a different color. You pinch off what you need, and knead - LOL. It's very handy for many things.
During the decorating step I also will wrap in front of those joints with sinew, fly tieing thread, etc and cover it with super glue or Fly tier's dressing - to add color or primitive look and to further seal the joints (Probably not really needed). If there is interest, I will post a couple (previously) finished ones later in this post, perhaps.

Ya, let's see some finished pics

Here is a Two Bone I did for a friend, Chuck Bunn, who had sent me his late, (Former Marine) Father's old MC Ka-Bar Knife. He still had his Dad's Dog tag so I decorated his call with one of my old ones too. Notice the similarity in our last names. Chuck and his Son took a nice bird with this call last Spring too, and sent me the wing bones - LOL:

And a Three Bone that I did for my bowyering teacher, Mike Brooks - who is a retired USN Corpsman

I'll slip a couple more in later, thanks for asking.

Cool work Bernie. You keep coming up with more and more hobbies. You are gonna work yourself to death with your retirement! ;D Actually I'm jealous! ;) 8) Pat
-
;D - don't be jealous, Pat, you've got your "Hobby Plate" pretty full (and well developed) too - but thanks, buddy.
-
I like them Bernie ! I make wing bone yelpers too. They are great calls when you figure out how to use them ;D
-
Bernie, those are the coolest calls i have ever seen... Wolf watcher has one, but yours are the finest i have seen.. I have no skills but would like to trade you for one ... if you have any left.. PM me if you are interested in trading Thanks ... Hawk a/ho
-
Sure, hawkbow, and thanks - but not right now. I only have bones to do the two bone ones (no "bell" bones) anyway - of course I sometimes think they sound better (higher) and are easier to tote around. My time is a little limited right now, and want to get back on some knives as soon as I finish these, but give me time and we should be able to work something out. I have a couple other guys I want to do calls for soon, though. What'd you have in mind to trade?
-
Very nice work,you have been busy.Beautiful. :)

Bernie. very nice calls, I also make my own wingbones, glueing them with epoxy, what is the name of the light blue or gray color stuff you knead to harden, that you get at wal-mrt, I would like to try that thanks
-
keekeerun (neat handle - LOL), I don't have the "name" as the labels always seem to come off the tube. It is put out by various makers, I believe, and is called different things. The first one I found was called "Plumbers Putty", but in an epoxy stick. They also have it for wood, steel, and various other materials I suppose - but all are usable for most anything, as near as I have found (I use it for a lot of things). The stuff (moldable putty) almost always comes in a plastic tube that resembles a flat bottomed test tube. Inside, the stuff will be wrapped in a soft flexible plastic and looks like a Tootsie Roll (not in color), with a diferent colored core. You pinch off what you need (never as much as you think - I wind up wasting a lot), knead it in your fingers 'til the two colors are blended - and you have a moldable putty. it hardens pretty soon after applying it and I sand, if needed, the next day. Great stuff. This bluish looking epoxy moldable putty you see in the pic has a super dark blue outside to it (it seems to be a little stickier in the hands to me). I prefer the lighter colors (more like wood) when I can find it - but that's just me. Hope this helps. Oh, a little acetone or fingernail polish remover will get any stubborn residue off your fingers/hands easily.

trade some of my glass points , antlers, arrows ..Wife ,, kids... lol ...I found some glass in the badlands and made some points and knives out of it .... I am not as good as cowboy or wolf watcher at knapping but the points will kill pretty easy..have whitetail antlers... and build primitive arrows ...Hawk a/ho
-
good deal I kinda like the look of the blue gray color, I'll try and find some thanks
-
Hawkbow, send picture of wife .................................... ;D Just kidding, afraid you better keep the wife and kids (it's cheaper and safer), my wife probably wouldn't appreciate it, and might not make me any more Turkey Soup. I'm sure we can get together (let's take it to PMs or e-mail). I got into knapping and was just beginning to get the hang of it a little when i quit for last deer season and haven't got back to it yet, I love knapped points and knapped knives (those "blades" kept breaking on me), also primitive arrows. So we have lots of fertile ground to work from, looks like.

Well, I have the six on the left done now - will start shipping those out tomorrow and hope to finish the other six and get them out by end of the week. Maybe I'll get a pic of the finished ones tomorrow AM and post it up.
In fact since I plan to pack them this evening, and there is still a little light left - DUH! I guess I better get a pic now, if I want one. Be back in a bit.
-
OK - the first half, finished and ready for pack/ship (I do the ones with only one winding first - LOL):

The first two are just one of the results of a fund raising aution for a couple of baby boys who got a rough start in life. They are doing well now and their respective fathers are looking forward to taking them Turkey hunting with them in the future - the Dad's can change the lanyards as the boys grow/age. Number three is for a winner in that same auction whose favorite team colors are red and black. Number four, also won in a (different) auction, Is for the Founder of PaleoPlanet. Number five is for a chap who was very generous with chunks of Osage Orange for knife handles, etc. (some know him as "nugget"), Number six is a surprise for a gentleman who has been most generous with his leather work, specially embossed for this ol' Marine.
Hope everyone likes them. I have the other six decorated but not with their lanyards yet. I'll post them when I get finished, if you like.
Ha! I just noticed I have to put another (second) winding of sinew on # six - LOL
-
Ready, Pack, Ship - and this is how they looked just before going to the post Office this AM, heading out to the recipients. Heads up, nugget et al - LOL

Just to finish this one off, here are pics of the second six from above, finished and ready to send out. You might see a name or two you recognize, or not, but they are all pretty much for good folks, who have done good deeds, IMO:

Also, while I'm at it, I'd like to show y'all this Turkey yelper made of River Cane. Simply by nesting graduated sizes and lengths of Cane together to produce a sound you like, then gluing, decorating as you care to (or not), and perhaps spraying (as in the bone ones) for extra protection. Use it/them the same as the Wing Bone Calls. You can also do this with hollow Carbon Rods (sometimes known as arrows ;) ) in graduated sizes and lengths, or whatever other tube materials your busy little mind can come up with - ;D

Hey ber643, I only have one thing to say: "Buildalong". Actually I think that's like three words stitched together, but "hey". ;D
Super great job. I made one a long time ago when I was a kid. It was from the cooked Thanksgiving day turkey. I was a little soft, but it sort of worked. Never hunted with it though. ::)
Those are really great looking works of art.
Thanks for sharing.

OB, I often use cooked bones (baked/stewed) but I boil them (for bleaching and removing meat/marrow), after the cooking, and they seem to be as hard as the uncooked ones, which I do the same way.
I do have a pictorial Build-a-long, that I've posted on a couple of other forums, that has been very well received. I would be my pleasure to transfer one to here also, if folks would like me to.

Tis the season for gobblers. 8)
In the words from Oliver Twist, "Might I have some more please"
Otoe
-
Ah - a majority of two - Otoe Bow and Oliver Twist - ;D Well, ... make it three, (I like to post them ;))
Does one post that type of thread directly to the "How Tos and Buid-a-longs" forum, or post here first, and then the moderators move it to there if they think it's worth saving? (Since I haven't put one on this site - except in the Bows Forum, that is.)
-
I think you're OK to post directly to the "How to" portion.
Otoe
-
Thanks, I'll try to get started on it later today, or tomorrow AM.
-
Feel free to post a build along Bernie, beautiful calls :)
-
Those are nice Bernie - I too would like to see a buildalong. Might want to try my hand at it someday :).
-
Thanks, to you all - The Teut is now posted on the How Tos and Build-a-longs Forum - Please enjoy.
-
Thanks for posting the wing bone turkey call build along, Bernie. It will be a great addition to our other build alongs. 8) Pat
-
You're welcome, Pat and i thank you.
-
Nice calls! Allow a question. I know how to make them, but does it sound? Is there possibility to put a "listen to TWC" into this thread? Is it blow like a whistle or a sucking sound?
-
Uwe, Questions always welcome.
You must suck, not blow, to make the yelping sounds. It is a rhythmic sucking, like lighting a pipe, or kissing repeatedly. In the "How Tos and Build-a-longs" forum I just posted a compleat teutorial on building the calls, and near the begining, as I recall, is a more extensive description of the use or technique. I hope this helps.
One of these days I must learn how to post a video/audio clip and add it to my teutorials, but I just stay too busy (I think - LOL).
-
Thanks for the answer. I thought it is to be sucked, when I remember the "houseturkey´s" calls of our early neighbour.
It makes sence. And a turkey is so stupid to be atracted by these calls?
-
;D Well, one always hopes they will - but a lot of times they will not - no matter how good a person gets at using it. The Wing Bone Calls can be very effective, though, especially if the birds aren't hearing to many more manmade "calls" than actual birds. One of the guys on another forum took a Turkey last Spring with one of my two bone calls - His (grown) son was using the call for him. In fact it was one of the calls I was making in the Teutorial.
-
As many things it is a game of passion. So good luck in hunting the big bird.
-
How true, how true! :)
-
I LOVE MINE ! ;D
-
LOL - I'm very pleased that you do, nugget, and thanks for saying so. I talked to my bowyering friend, Mike (who has a great work shop) about cutting all those sweet Osage chunks into nice usable pieces for knife parts for me - he's on board.
-
BTW, Pat B had asked about Rose's Turkey Wing Soup Recipe - I finally added it to the Build-a-long thread in that forum, just the other day.
