Title: Back in the saddle
Post by: ksnow on June 15, 2017, 08:48:44 am
Morning all,
Just put the first few arrows through a new ash flatbow.  After my last ash bow disassembled itself, I was a bit nervous about this one.
The growth rings look much better, thick late wood, thin early wood, nice and even.
I had it tillered to 45# at 25 inches at Marshall.  Got it back now to 47# at 27 inches, just right for me.
It is made from an ash cut on a nearby farm, they needed to make their lane wider for the new tractor and said I could have all the logs I wanted if I cut the rest into firewood and burned the brush.

And the requisite full draw pic:

That bend looks real nice Kyle and that's a real nice weight to. Ash can be a very pretty wood to, a lot of people around here used it for trim work.  Show us again when you get her all prettied up.

Tiller looks really nice! The one ash sapling bow I did shows that the wood has some promise, and I'll at least one more.

Also, nice shirt! I missed the Draken by about 24 hours when they passed through Alpena, MI last summer. Was there seeing family, and actually in the harbor the day before for a shipwreck tour. Was pretty bummed, looked really cool. Followed the rest of their trip online.

Sweet stick. I haven't had too much success with ash. Glad to see some justice done to it.  :BB

Thanks for all the compliments guys. Yes, ash can be finicky, I think the early to late growth ratio is very important. I have 9 more staves from this tree, they all look like this, hopefully there are several more bows like this.

Nakedfeet, I got to see the Draken in Sturgeon Bay and Green Bay. Absolutely stunning. Did the deck tour three times, could have spent a wolf day looking at the details.

Nice tiller job Kyle. Is that the same bow you were working on at Marshall?

Yes, it is. The one you said "well, you could leave it like that" . Well, the first one I worked on, not the one I heated on the caul. The shop has been way too humid to do the rough work on the second bow. Maybe this week, it is supposed to dry out a bit.
