...it's backed with carp skin!
I got a really nice stave of osage from the Beadman (thanks Ed :)) in trade and while pondering what to do with it, I came upon Brad's thread on straight vs. static tips. That inspired me to build a static recurve. Actually I made 2, but I haven't shot the second enough yet so I'll post that later.
Here's some info...
65" ntn
55# @ 27"
Buffalo horn tips
Goat-rawhide backed w/ carp skins over that
Leather from a thrift-store jacket wrapped around the handle
Thanks for taking the time to look (-P

Stickbender, Thanks man. The bandsaw is such a great thing to have. I don't know how I went so long without one!
Thanks BJ. The statics really seem to give it an extra push. (AT)

Brad, I love it when a bowyer as awesome as you gives me a compliment as nice as yours. (-S
Dbar, Thank you kindly sir! :)
-
Looks good nice job

I kinda figured I'd see the carp skin backed bow by the title that I knew you had in the works.Sure enough you must be been done shooting it in.They sure do look nice.Nice bend on your bow and resting profile.Good poundage out of that stick too.Look forward to seeing the other one.
-
Great looking bow. Love the carp skins and those sharp hooks. Great job!
-
Nice work upstate. That unbraced profile and FD look awesome. Nice hooks too
-
Looking good! Those skins came out nice, and the static tips are sweet man!
-
Very nice looking bow. How does it perform? Sweet looking skins.
-
great bow. Love the fish skins :OK
-
Many thanks everyone.
Bead, I was happy to get the poundage that I did. I went with the osage mantra you told me about, "thicker is quicker." (SH)
I'm glad ya'll think the skins look good. I certainly got enough complaints about the smell from my wife, not to mention the dog trying to eat my bow!
-
I hear you Jeff.I had some horn handle overlay material setting on a stand next to my lounge chair and Robins' little terrier ate it up.Little bugger!!Once my bows are sealed good even the sinew ones they leave it alone.I've got bow racks up stairs and down stairs too.I figure it's my fault.
-
very, very nice Mister! That fd looks great.
That cut in shelfs are not my thing, but that's just me ....
Keep up that fine bow working!
-
I should of mentioned this.I like your shorter type abrupt static bend there. Most are a bit longer.
-
Thanks Simson, there's nothing like making bows. Nothing in the world!
Thanks Bead, I got the idea for short abrupt hooks from looking at Marc's bows. ;)
-
I I like he unstrung pic. Good tiller! Nice work. Arvin
-
What is fade and midlimb widths? Arvin
-
That is a nice looking bow indeed
-
Sweet bow! I've been pondering what to do for a selfbow and I really like the way yours looks, so I might go for that. I also really like how narrow you made your tips.
-
That's a nice one there. Really like those carp skins
-
Awesome bow, and I like the way the carp skins look on it.
-
Thank you Marc. I started making static recurves after reading your chapter in TBB 4. I really like the performance of the short sharp-bending tips. :)
Ty, I highly recommend this style of bow. The short static bends allow for plenty of working limb and I think the length gives it a certain stability that's hard to beat with a recurve.
Thanks GS and rps3. There's a ton of carp in my dad's pond. The things have totally taken over so perhaps I'll catch a few more, skin um, and put um up on the trading post one of these days. ;)
