Can you envision the Lakota De-flexed Handle Bow in this piece of Hedge Wood??? I can....now all I have to do is bring it out..the Stave is only 53 inches long and 5 inches wide at the widest end....but I think that this little Osage Limb will be a good Sioux Bow....we'll see!! I am shooting for about 48 inches and about 1 1/4 inches at the Handle area.....it's a little Snaky...but not bad....Will keep you posted as thing go....don't have much time this weekend....but I will get it roughed out and in the Drying Box....it was cut last Spring ....so it is probably dry enough....I am lucky it didn't split to heck....since I never removed the Bark or Sapwood!!!! What a fool I am!!!

I wouldn't go by the natural shape as to the bow style to make but split it as to the compression side/tension side and make it(the tension side) the shape you want with a little heat. Split it, remove the bark(and sapwood but that isn't necessary for a successful bow) and seal the back and ends. Even though it was cut last year, with the bark left on it might not be as dry as you think. "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure"! and it doesn't take but a few minutes to seal it. Pat
-
Thanks Pat....I split it to the Center...saved both sides even.... So I am getting better at this!!!I stripped it to the Heartwood....I am not going to chase a Ring till it's dry....you are right....still feels a bit Damp....and I don't have a Moisture Meter either...so it's off to the Hot box with it for a while!! We'll see just how bad it twists up on me....I was planning on Heat Bending the Bow Style into it....I wasn't depending on the Natural Shape of the Limb!! I know what Hedge does after it is split!! I just have a bad tendency to look at a Stave...and it tells Me....I am a Wampanoag Bow....or I am Firewood!!!
-
Looks like a good hunk a wood :). Interested ta see what come's out of it..

Cowboy........Either Magic.........or a couple of peices of Firewood......your guess is as good as Mine right now!!!
-
;D ;D
-
It's got the right shape so I would make it just as it is. You can make a gull wing from the other side
-
Now thats a Though Marc.....two beautiful Primitive Designs from on Stick......cool!!!!!
-
Sounds good, keep us posted! The bend of their bows was usually reflexed handle, deflexed limbs......so it was opposite to what we would do now days. You could do it whichever way, though, I suppose. It'll make a cool looking bow either way. ;)

Well I could not wait any longer....so here is what I got as of today....I am still leaning on Flipping the Tips on it and making it a Recurve of sorts.....what do you think???.....I cant beleive how rubbery this stuff gets with a little Heat!!!! Anyway it is back to the Hotbox for this little guy.....It ended up 50" Long....1 1/4" thick in the Handle...and 1 3/8" wide tapering to 3/4" Tips .....so far anyways!! I shouldn't have done it....but I crowned the Top Tip....so I can put Horse Hair on it.....cut the String Nocks to....I know that this is jumping the Gun....but it seems to be dry enough....when I first removed the Bark I was worried that it may still have too much Moisture....but Saturday I took it out and tapped it on the Concrete Floor and it rang like it was Dry.....I hope that it wont split.....if it does....I'll shorten it up some more!!!

>:D >:D >:D >:D >:D >:D
It needed a little convincing to get the Bottom limb to look like the Top did naturally.... So I cheated and clamped it in my Homemade Osage Presser!!!! I made a form out of two 2X8 Treated Boards I naile together....cut the Shape I wanted....Steamed the Piss and Vinegar out of her....and clamped Her up for the Overnight....and this is what I had this Morning.....but I think I will let it cook till this weekend...then I will decide on what to do next....I know She is getting a good backing of Ostrich Sinew....but I am still thinking about flipping the Tips....really flipping them
-
I would use dry heat on the ends of the limbs and just continue the natural shape of the bend that you have at mid limb.
-
You think so Marc??? I was really wanting to kick them back the opposite way and make it look like a Cupids Bow of sort...you know like Reflexed Handle .....Deflexed Limbs...... with Recurve Tips.....any thought?????
-
Well now you got me. Which is the belly and what's the back?
-

The Belly is on the Right side of the Picture......
-
Ah I thought you were going for a deflex reflex. In that case I would leave it alone
-
Yankee I have one hear that I am waiting for snake skin to finish out and I recurved the tips on it it looks okay you going to be able to draw it to ware it needs to be without string coming off if not go ahead and flip those tips :o
Dennis
To flip or not to flip that is the question
-

Marc...the Bow I built so far is just like the one on the Bottom of page 66 in TBB vol.3.....but I am leaning towards making it just like the Bow on the Top of the Page.....what do you think?????
-
Yankee, with dry wood you are risking checking if you use steam to make corrections. A little dry heat(I put oil on the wood, some don't) and a little pressure will recurve the tips. You don't need much and it will help with the string angle at full draw on that short of a bow. Pat
-
Thanks Pat.....the Heat Gun it is.....thats what I was wanting to flip the Tips for....this is a really short Bow...and I want the String to stay put at full Draw!!
Once I flip the Tips....how long do you think I should leave it in the Hot Bx???
-
Yankee thats looking really good. I like the way you are using the natural shape as much as possible. I would do like Pat said, Dry heat and roll the tips up some to help the string angle.
Given the shape of the wood that you started with, you reall good chosing a style that fit the shape. Go for it ;D You can do it ! Keenan
-
I use a hot box as needed. If the wood sounds dry and you don't notice any set(or very little) as you work it the hot box may not be a necessity unless the humidity is high. You can get osage to dry! :o Pat
-
Well Guys.....I could not stand it no Longer.....So I made a Cawl.......cut the the Tips off ....1 inch on each side ....to get rid of the Nocks I carved in....since they would not fit with the New Style...... So now She is right at 48 inches in length....I heated her up till you could not touch it for long.........and had the Wife ready.....We stuck it in the Cawl....clamped Her down in record time .....and now I have a what.... Cupid Style Bow..... I like it better now anyways....I just hope that with the Natural Snakiness of this Stave...that the Flipped Tips don't become a problem!!!

That looks way to short for ya yankee better send it to da UP eh ;) ::) :)
-
That's beginning to look like it really has great potential!
-
We'll see how much Potential I have ....the wood has a Lot!!! As for the Length...Well Dana ....I am going to have to learn to Snap Shoot now aint I!!!!
-
;) ;D
-
Hey Yankee thats looking sweet ;) I know someone with a real short draw that could shoot that just fine ;D ;D ;D Hate to see you develope any bad habits by to short of a draw. >:D Keenan
-
I've been wanting to do one with a profile like that for some reason - just looks cool :), but man that's short :-X. Waiting to see how she turns out and performs ;)...
-
Well Cowboy....I haven't had too much time to work on this lately...and next week I go back on a Shutdown...so I will be working 12-14 hour Night Shifts...so I don't see too much happening then either....I have it tillered to 14 inches right now....I don't believe I can do more than 18 inches on it.....without blowing Her up....I will post pictures of it at Draw soon....what do you more educated Bowyers think I should shoot for ...for Draw length on a 48 inch bow like this??? Am I asking too much for 18 inches....or is 20 possible??
-
hmm just guessin but with a bendy handle I don't see why you can't get at least 20" out of it
and I would think with sinew backing even more.
-
i seem to remember tim baker getting 28 inches out of a 48 inch hickory recurve in TBB1...and 50# of draw!
-
Ooooh, I hate shut-downs :-X. Only did that once :D...With my limited knowledge I'd say - several courses of sinew :)..
-
You think??? I would hate to eat this Little Monster...She is one tough piece of Hedge Wood!!! Don't think they make a Barbecue Sauce for Horse Apple ....do they!!! >:D I am planning on at least three layers of Sinew...two Leg...one Back to make it smooth....and then a bunch of hafting to keep the Sinew for separating in all of the Bends! Just like this one I did in the attached picture....

Ive got unbacked osage and elm bows 50" long with ridged handles that I regularly draw to 26.5" with absouloutley no problem. In fact they both still hold unstrung reflex. If you put sinew on that little sucker I wouldnt be scared to take her back to around 26" You just need to see how your string angle is going to be, you dont want to pull it past 90 degrees at full draw. In another words the bow should tell you how far its willing to go.
