Title: Started a TC Hawken kit
Post by: Eric Krewson on January 30, 2017, 07:26:11 pm
I didn't have any projects after I finished the Renegade so I started on a TC Hawken kit I picked up the other day.

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v181/ekrewson/projects/hawken%20kit%20001_zps3tcz7kae.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/ekrewson/media/projects/hawken%20kit%20001_zps3tcz7kae.jpg.html)

I drilled all the holes for the tang, trigger, trigger guard and barrel wedge plates, always a pain getting them centered just right.

I did a mock-up assembly, everything went went in properly, wood shaping is next.

Flintlock or percussion?

Also which brand is it and where did you pick it up?

Man those old TC stocks had some pretty walnut. This ought to look real nice when you are done Eric.

This is a percussion gun, my brother bought the kit for my dad over 30 years ago, he never put it together. The kit has been in dad's basement for years untouched, he is 98 and on a walker so he would have never finished it. My brother found it on a closet clean up and asked me if I wanted it, me being a gun builder and all. Rather than take it for free I sent what I thought it was worth ($300) to my brother to put in dad's always meager bank account. I felt I needed to pay for it, that way if I keep it or sell it no feelings will be hurt.

Beg your pardon for being forward, but if you're gonna sell, let me know what you need (cash or trade.) I'm awful fond of your workmanship.

I haven't decided whether to keep it or move it on at this point.

The Renegade I posted in the other thread got a lot of interest locally after I put it on my facebook page. A friend cornered me in Walmart yesterday and said he wanted it, I sold it to him for $15 more than I had in parts, I had around $385 in parts. I had around $200 in the L&R lock which jacked my parts cost way up.

My next kit gun is going to be a Kibler flintlock kit, google it and you will be blown away, the best of the best.

Next I started removing the excess wood around the lock plate, trigger and tang to get ready for the final wood shaping. I leave about a 32nd of extra wood above the parts to be removed by the final sanding. If I fit the parts perfectly now a final sanding will make them stand proud of the wood which will look sloppy.

Looking real good!  I did the final finishing one one and it is a good shooter.  Had to go to a peep sight because of old eyes.  Now, I just need to get the hand working right so I can shoot come spring.

The kit stock comes with a ton of extra wood, I had seen a reshaped TC stock  done by a master flintlock builder and emailed him to see if he had some pictures of his butt stock from different angles.

He took some for me and sent them to me, I liked the way he shaped his stock and followed his lead.

He had lowered the comb, lengthed the wrist and reshaped the cheek piece, I copied his work.

Wow, that is a nice looking stock Eric, I'm curious about the wrench laying there you use it as a gauge for measuring.

I have a pivoting vise, I keep a wrench on the locking nut all the time because when I put odd shaped pieces in my vise they seldom line up with the support post on the end of my work bench. I loosen the nut and swing the piece around to have good support on the post and tighten it back up.

TCs wedge plates sit proud of the wood like a bump on a log;

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v181/ekrewson/projects/hawken%20wedge%20plate%20003_zpskr4oxpg2.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/ekrewson/media/projects/hawken%20wedge%20plate%20003_zpskr4oxpg2.jpg.html)

I decided to inlet the plate flush with the wood for a more streamlined look. Here I am outlining it with an exacto knife.

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v181/ekrewson/projects/hawken%20wedge%20plate%20004_zpswsgkh6ms.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/ekrewson/media/projects/hawken%20wedge%20plate%20004_zpswsgkh6ms.jpg.html)

The cavity is lowered to the depth of the plate at my exacto knife cuts;

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v181/ekrewson/projects/hawken%20wedge%20plate%20005_zpslggmiu0z.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/ekrewson/media/projects/hawken%20wedge%20plate%20005_zpslggmiu0z.jpg.html)

In and flush with the wood. I was a little sloppy on the ends but soaked the inlet with water to swell the wood to close any gaps.

I narrowed the comb and extended the wrist.

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v181/ekrewson/projects/hawken%20stock%20shaping%20tang%20007_zpsgkcyvdhs.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/ekrewson/media/projects/hawken%20stock%20shaping%20tang%20007_zpsgkcyvdhs.jpg.html)

I took a bunch of wood off the forestock and changed the slab sided kit profile to a more rounded profile.

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v181/ekrewson/projects/hawken%20stock%20shaping%20tang%20002_zpsgyffd5e3.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/ekrewson/media/projects/hawken%20stock%20shaping%20tang%20002_zpsgyffd5e3.jpg.html)

I draw the lock panels with a compass with the point broken off.

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v181/ekrewson/projects/hawken%20stock%20shaping%20tang%20003_zpspejzaki7.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/ekrewson/media/projects/hawken%20stock%20shaping%20tang%20003_zpspejzaki7.jpg.html)

Done, not enough wood to make proper Hawken like panels so I have to make the TC type.

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v181/ekrewson/projects/hawken%20stock%20shaping%20tang%20004_zpsdbkqfn9c.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/ekrewson/media/projects/hawken%20stock%20shaping%20tang%20004_zpsdbkqfn9c.jpg.html)

I did a little more work this afternoon; The brass was really rough so I sanded it down and have it pretty smooth but haven't put it on a buffing wheel yet.

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v181/ekrewson/projects/lock%20panels%20002_zps4ivqoncu.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/ekrewson/media/projects/lock%20panels%20002_zps4ivqoncu.jpg.html)

I started shaping my lock panels and blending them into the forestock and wrist;

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v181/ekrewson/projects/lock%20panels%20001_zpsyo3vhwmu.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/ekrewson/media/projects/lock%20panels%20001_zpsyo3vhwmu.jpg.html)

Done for the most part except for final sanding;

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v181/ekrewson/projects/lock%20panels%20003_zpspsbrj865.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/ekrewson/media/projects/lock%20panels%20003_zpspsbrj865.jpg.html)

Making a pattern to transfer to the lock plate side;

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v181/ekrewson/projects/lock%20panels%20004_zps2abciz6w.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/ekrewson/media/projects/lock%20panels%20004_zps2abciz6w.jpg.html)

Transferred to the other side;

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v181/ekrewson/projects/lock%20panels%20005_zpsgwgpeyha.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/ekrewson/media/projects/lock%20panels%20005_zpsgwgpeyha.jpg.html)

Done shaping the lock side stock and panel;

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v181/ekrewson/projects/lock%20panels%20007_zpskuauilcv.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/ekrewson/media/projects/lock%20panels%20007_zpskuauilcv.jpg.html)

More tomorrow, almost done.

I needed a break from the walnut dust to let my lungs come back to normal so I decided to blue the barrel and under rib.

The first step it to drawfile, or in my case sand the flats with 220 grit sandpaper because the barrel finish isn't too rough.

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v181/ekrewson/projects/bluing%20the%20barrel%20001_zpskuobduw4.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/ekrewson/media/projects/bluing%20the%20barrel%20001_zpskuobduw4.jpg.html)

I apply Oxpho Blue with a steel wool pad, at first it is streaky and uneven but smooths out with additional coats.

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v181/ekrewson/projects/bluing%20the%20barrel%20002_zpsqkiokyiv.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/ekrewson/media/projects/bluing%20the%20barrel%20002_zpsqkiokyiv.jpg.html)

Done;

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v181/ekrewson/projects/bluing%20the%20barrel%20003_zps2k864qo7.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/ekrewson/media/projects/bluing%20the%20barrel%20003_zps2k864qo7.jpg.html)

I did the final sanding and metal to stock fitting today. The last going over was out in the setting sunlight, this makes all the scratches you missed show up.

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v181/ekrewson/projects/stock%20finished%20sanding%20001_zpsubftbtry.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/ekrewson/media/projects/stock%20finished%20sanding%20001_zpsubftbtry.jpg.html)

I am done except for stock finishing and assembly.  Somehow I lost my bottle of Birchwood Casey walnut sealer so I had to order another bottle. As soon as it comes in I will finish the stock and bring this project to a close.

Done;

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v181/ekrewson/projects/stock%20finished%20sanding%20002_zpsynbiocil.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/ekrewson/media/projects/stock%20finished%20sanding%20002_zpsynbiocil.jpg.html)

Getting down to the wire on the gun build, I have two coats of stock sealer on so far. Walnut is a porous wood, to have a slick finish one needs to seal the pores of the wood before applying the final gunstock varnish. I apply stock sealer, sand it off and reapply until the sealer fills only the pores and leaves bare wood on the surface.

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v181/ekrewson/projects/stock%20sealer%20001_zps0woikymv.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/ekrewson/media/projects/stock%20sealer%20001_zps0woikymv.jpg.html)

5 coats of sealer filled the pores, the first coat of oil finish is on. Mighty strange looking wood in this gunstock, I suspect it is crotch wood.

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v181/ekrewson/projects/hawken%20stock%20wood%20001_zpsi1y8zs26.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/ekrewson/media/projects/hawken%20stock%20wood%20001_zpsi1y8zs26.jpg.html)

I cut this crotch wood blank a few months ago, I see similarities.

I started putting my TC together this afternoon. TC had put on the butt plate, trigger guard and nose cap with temporary steel screws and stripped one hole on each of the two screws that held these pieces into place,

I was drilling out the bad buttplate screw to install a dowel for a redrill thinking I had my stock held firmly in my vise  and out it went to the floor breaking out a small piece out of the toe in the process. I couldn’t find the eraser sized piece that broke out so I used another piece of walnut to fill in the break. My walnut piece didn’t match and looked like do-do. I need to install a brass toe plate to make everything look good again.

Ah the devil really is in the details. I hate looking for small pieces dropped on my shop floor. Good idea to cover it with a toe plate.

Here is the fix for the chipped out place;

My initial repair sux;

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v181/ekrewson/hawken%20toeplate%20002%20-%20Copy_zpsa09hwofd.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/ekrewson/media/hawken%20toeplate%20002%20-%20Copy_zpsa09hwofd.jpg.html)

Positioned a toe plate;

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v181/ekrewson/hawken%20toeplate%20001%20-%20Copy_zpszqktvpk9.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/ekrewson/media/hawken%20toeplate%20001%20-%20Copy_zpszqktvpk9.jpg.html)

Scribed the stock width on the plate, senior moment, I should have inletted the plate first as the stock get bigger as it goes toward the center.

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v181/ekrewson/hawken%20toeplate%20004%20-%20Copy_zpsjb3agmja.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/ekrewson/media/hawken%20toeplate%20004%20-%20Copy_zpsjb3agmja.jpg.html)

Cutting the toe plate t my scribed lines;

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v181/ekrewson/hawken%20toeplate%20005%20-%20Copy_zpse5saflwl.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/ekrewson/media/hawken%20toeplate%20005%20-%20Copy_zpse5saflwl.jpg.html)

Marking for my first cut;

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v181/ekrewson/hawken%20toeplate%20007_zpsjstuq1zx.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/ekrewson/media/hawken%20toeplate%20007_zpsjstuq1zx.jpg.html)

Inletted with the stock wood trimmed to the plate that I cut about 1/16" too narrow;

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v181/ekrewson/hawken%20toeplate%20008_zpsmgoxevzt.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/ekrewson/media/hawken%20toeplate%20008_zpsmgoxevzt.jpg.html)

I had to file the butt plate to the new narrower width.

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v181/ekrewson/hawken%20toeplate%20009_zpsdmhwrepb.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/ekrewson/media/hawken%20toeplate%20009_zpsdmhwrepb.jpg.html)

Done, a little extra bling never hurts. Of course I will have to refinish part of the stock to make everything perfect but I will be satisfied with the fix.

Well the saga continues; I was doing my final assembly (for the second time), put all the parts in the stock and the hammer wouldn't cock. A quick check of the lock showed that the sear spring plunger wasn't contacting the sear.

No problem I thought, a little oil and a tap or two should free it up, not so. Lots of oil and trying to twist it out were to no avail the dang thing wasn't moving. I ended up taking it to a gunsmith friend, we had to mill the plunger out, it was solidly welded in place with rust.

I don't know how the spring housing got moisture in it but we destroyed the parts getting them out. I found one place had had both parts,(about the size of an pencil eraser) and wanted $13 to ship them. I bought them elsewhere.

The original lock that came with my TC kit failed after about a year. I replaced it with an L&R lock and am very happy with the result.

If I put an L&R lock in this gun I would have a lot more in it than it would be worth finished.

I guess you all are wondering why I haven't finished the gun and posted pictures; I ordered a sear spring and plunger on the 3rd from different places. The spring was delivered in a couple of days, when I checked with the company about the plunger I found it wasn't shipped until the 10th but still hasn't gotten here, I suspect it got lost in the mail.
