I finished this bow a couple months ago, but I knew that I'd be camping at one of my favourite places on planet Earth, Pachena Bay on the west coast of Vancouver island, so I held off on taking photos till this past weekend. Its made from a dead standing young yew tree, cut not far from where these photos were taken.
I removed all the rotten sapwood and affected heartwood, and got a nice straight board from the centre of a 4" diameter tree. The wood was very dense and fairly dry off the stump, it didn't warp or twist at all as it dried.
I boiled in the recurves, and steamed the 3 bends in the handle. It was worked until I could brace it, then 3 layers of sinew were laid on over the course of a month or so. I let it season about 5 months before I started bending it.
52" NTN, pulls 56# at 25", tillered to 26". Dyed deer hide grip, rawhide tips, and 2 of the nicest matched copperheads I've ever seen from Cip (thanks amigo). A few coats of shellac and a few coats of tung oil.
Was getting in the high 170s and a couple low 180s through my chrony with some 500 grain arrows. This will be my go-to bow for the next while, cheers guys thanks for looking

Sweet little bow! I love the pin nocks. I use those on most all of the bows I make these days.

Quality work all around Ryan, the profiles look amazing and so do the copperheads.

-
Very Nice!
The snake skins are a perfect match for the yew colour.
If you like pachena bay, you should try grant bay by winter harbour.
-
DAMN!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Very nice Sir! Clean as a whistle.
-
Just speechless Mr. Goat. I keep lookin at it and finally had to respond. Thanx for sharing that.
-
Fantastic job Ryan. Skins are killer.
-
Great job Ryan. Does that #36 2016 mean you've made 36 bows this year?
-
Nice bow Goat. By the way how many times do you shoot your bows. I find that after 100-150 shots sometimes the dynamics change like set, string follow etc... tell me what you think. ::)
-
nice job buddy
-
Now that's a nice bow! I gotta try to make a shorty like that.
-
I really like that one a lot! Great work pullin that beauty from a dead standing tree.

Very pretty. Beautiful lines.
-
Well done again man. I like those nocks.
-
Very nice all around but my favorite pic of the group is the last, that 52 incher looks alive and wicked at full draw and those stats from the chrono prove it does have a bite that will kill. Excellent bow Ryan.
-
holy crap man that thing is sick !!!! well done :o
-
very nice, thanks for posting the specs and fps,, very nice shootin bow, congrats, B
-
oooo-weeee!
-
Beautiful work, from the lines to the skins. And those tips are pretty unique/rad.
-
Very nice work. I've always liked the 5 curve designs but have never built one. I've been watching your work for some time now and I have to say, you seem to have really defined your style with the bows you've been building. Simple selfbows, finely executed. I'm genuinely impressed.
Keep it up.
-
stickbender - I did weigh the sinew bundles back when I sinewed the bow, I believe around 3 oz.
Tree ninja - I havent been to Winter Harbour area yet, one day! Been to Cape Scott though, so cool and creepy up northern island.
DC - 36 bows altogether, although I only number the ones that cut the mustard and make it to finishing stages. '
Bow101 - I shoot 100-200 arrows through my bows before I send them off. I also begin shooting in my bows when they are not yet at full draw, the bow can tell you alot at that stage. If you are getting excessive set / string follow, its either wood related, or design and execution related.
If your asking about this bow in particular, it has shot well over a few hundred arrows, before these pictures were taken. Sinew backed yew has its reputation for a reason ;)
Hope to see you BC boys at the gathering in Sept
-

Always enjoy seeing your bows in wonderful surroundings, but I have to say , this is the first time looking at your posts that I didn't notice the awesome scenery. Not until reading other posts mentioning it... I had to go back and look. The bow is stealing the show!

Holy ^8%$!!
How'd I miss seeing this??
Love it Ryan.
-
To me, that's about as good as they get. Fantastic work bud!
-
Absolutely Fantastic! So clean, so smooth...
I have a piece of yew, approx 2" wide & 58" long that I've been curing for 5 years...you, Kind Sir, have given me inspiration to pull out that piece and start working on it. I even have a ton of combed out sinew I will be dedicating to the project.
Thanks for sharing the stats & pics...inspiring to say the least.
-

Love the curves and handle wrap. Mind if I ask how you achieve that effect?
-
I was wondering about the handle wrap as well. I would like to use the style on my wife's bow.
Eric
-
Cheers guys. For the handle I use cork to build it up on the back of the handle. I buy sheets of cork from an arts and crafts store and it's cheap. Glue it on and carve with a fine rasp to fit your hand.
The wrap is just a strip of deer hide that I dyed with leather dye. For this style of wrap I always use an obsidian or chert knife and don't worry about making perfect clean cuts, then I just wrap away, as easy as that.
-
Wow, that is a stunner! The full draw curve is just absolutely beautiful. You have outdone yourself again Ryan.
-
Great, thanks WG, pretty straight forward. I've been trying to get my elk hide that I bark tanned thin enough without creating huge ridges, so it will overlap as nice as your did. I'll keep giving it a go.

I used this when i did my first wrap like this
-
Thanks bubby! That's exact tyoe of tutorial I was looking for.
Eric
-
Belt sander? There's gotta be an easier way... maybe just using a really thin skin?
-
If you just use a really thin leather you get a flat grip. I don't think anyone building wood bows is looking for an easy way out
-
That's a beauty, my Friend, well done.
-
Thanks again Guys. Bubby, very cool I haven't seen that tutorial yet.
I used very thin hide for this one
-
Ryan the good thing about this wrap is it gives you finger grooves and is very comfy
-
Goat, You are setting the bar pretty high with your functional works of art. Beautiful!
-
If you just use a really thin leather you get a flat grip. I don't think anyone building wood bows is looking for an easy way out
or to be more primitive, maybe sandstone..
I just did this - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0a0fcgXfTBA#t=2m14s
-
So what do you do to get that to work loon
-
Absolutely beautiful. Copperhead skins are slammin
-
