Title: SE Idaho Knapping groups?
Post by: DesertDisciple on August 16, 2016, 09:39:44 am
I've wanted to get involved in knapping for a while. Absolute zero experience and would like to get involved with a group to pick up some advice on getting started. Willing to make my own tools and do my own groundwork, just looking for some guys (or gals) to learn from.  If there's anyone in SE Idaho or Salt Lake area I'd love to get together and break stuff with ya.

Thanks!

Next time I'm working in Pocatello I'll give you a shout out. I was out there last year.

I am in Salt lake, well, i'm just south of it. Look into groups in the Logan, or Ogden area. There was a good group here and it has all but fizzled out and died. Bo Earls lives in Utah county. He is pretty good and used to run the Utah county group until he moved.

I live just south of Jojo and have been trying to teach myself too.  My advice is to find a glass bottle recycle bin and practice on the bottoms of those bottles.  It is like learning to golf.  You hit a hundred worm burners, and then have one hit that sails perfect down the fairway.  Then you see why people keep trying.  With knapping, you make a lot of debris and some really ugly points, but then one flake will run like it is supposed to, and then you will have one whole point that doesn't totally suck, and so forth.  Maybe you, me and Joe can get together sometime and all look horrible together.

Well where have you been? Half eye also has a friend in Weber county that is an excellent knapper.

Mullet, what do you do for work?

Jojo and Jeff let's make it happen! Maybe when at least one of us gets good we can start a group. Haha.  I'd be glad to make a trip down sometime. The furthest down that way I've been is Hyde Park to drop off the moving truck.

Glad some of you guys are nearby.

I'm about 150 miles east of Salt Lake.  I usually head to Pocatello once a year for the Fort Hall Festivals which was just last weekend.

Redhand, I was there briefly last weekend unlocking a truck. If you happened to see a white locksmith van circling the area looking lost, that was me. Haha. Sorry I missed you!

I think that would be great.  Don't think we need to wait to be good --especially if we can get Fletcha to come.  All we need is a time and a place.  Then we bring some bows and some arrows and some rocks and have at it.

One of my best childhood friends lives in Twin Falls. I haven't been there in years.

Don't let him fool you DD, he sits in his jeep and reads, when he isn't hitting hogs with his jeep.  He sets the rig up, and sits and reads.  Don't offer to buy him a drink, he will find some way to make it out that way!

My name is Dan Hamblin.   I am the knapper that JoJo mentioned in an early post who lives in Ogden and a good friend to Half Eye.  I have a small shop which makes it nice to come in the winter.  I would love some company as long as you let me know a head of time.   By the way,  Bo Earls is back in Utah County and he is the best teacher ever.  However, he is one busy dude and hard to nail down for lessons.

He started working with me shortly before I changed jobs. He ran the Utah county knappers for awhile before he moved. Then Mike Brown took over and ran it before moving to Cody, Wyoming, if you are near there look him up, he does weekly get togethers in his garage, and makes awesome knives and points.

Mark Burdett is in the Provo Area. Jeff, you should look him up. He makes micro points. Some super awesome work.
