It looks darker at the tips. Did you use progressive(for lack of a better word) fuming?
-
That's a beautiful bow Simon realy uniqe !
-
I don't think it would even be fair to enter this guy's bows into the BOM contest! ;D I rarely post but I had to on this one. Absolutely beautiful bow across the board! Simson, Everyday I log on to PA with this thought in mind, " Maybe Simson posted another bow!"
-

Magnificent color. Very cool bow.
-
As nice as always :)
-
Jesus man that's incredible!
-
Incredible such a simple yet amazingly fancy bow. I love it, how does this fuming method work? Is there a build along for it? That bow bends so nice.
-
Another nice bow Simon.
-
Keeping it simple is sometimes hard, but this bow really stands out because of its lack of fringes.
What a killer bow. I prefer 'm a bit less glossy though.
-
Very cool looking stick Simon, you are turning out beauties as usual. I love the character, profile and exceptionally smooth tiller of this one. The colors your getting from the fuming are amazing as well, good stuff coming out of your shop. :)
-
Wau!
-
Beautiful bow, very nice work as usual. ;) :)

You've done it again. That is beautiful in all respects.

No progressive fuming, I know what you meant.
The color is very homogen - a deep black.
What you see on the stick are reflections from environment. It's hard to describe what color the wood has, but it gets depth.

There is howto here on PA -don't remember the where I did it. But you can visit my site, on the HOWTO section is info

Yeah, I'm also no fan of glossy finish. But on the fumed blackies it does look great ... I cannot resist.
Thank you all for your kind compliments, glad you like the stick!
-
Just beautiful! Love the way the finish looks.

Simon, what concentration of ammonia are you using? I think the stuff I have experimented with was only 5%

Aaron, I use solutions of 20% and 10%. I think only 5% is a bit low. Go to a restorer shop they have the stuff you want.
You can increase and speed up with temperature, place your setup in the sun or heat up anyhow. Just be careful the stuff is dangerous on skin and eyes and lungs.
-
Very very nice!!!! Those tips are skinny..
It's so good! An absolute beauty.
-
I really like your bows and this one is no exception!
Question: Sapwood seems softer than heartwood. Wouldn't that cause problems with FF strings??
-
Thanks Simon

I couldn't find more than 5%(small town) so I put the jar on one of those little coffee cup warmers. They are about 140 degrees. That helped a lot but the bow got extremely wet. A lot of drying time was needed. I gave it a week or so to dry.

Beautiful bow Simon! I like the way you finish your bows. Thanks for sharing.

Frank, I use 2x3 strand strings up to 70 pounds. At the ears are 2x2 pieces of dacron added. I wouldn't go without an overlay on soft woods like yew or juniper, but with osage I see no problem. I have made overlays from osage sap on osage bows, works without any issues.
BTW.: this is a heartwood only bow, the 'overlays' are heartwood rings
schöne Grüße!
