This was a heartwood hickory stave that I had split out of the big hickory stave gifted to me by John the bowyer. I decided to try a really long tip overlay in Osage and ended up doing a cherry wood underlay as well. Though, the cherry was a result of having cracked the belly while putting curves in. Whatever works. Lol

Superb bow! Those under and overlays look great and the flipped tips as well.

You got some really nice curves on that one! Job well done. I really like the handle wrap.
-
very smooth lookin bow. that's a beaut.
-
I like the looks of this one, especially the grain on the back. Did you heat treat the belly?
-
Beautifull bow nice bend !
-
Great looking bow.
-
Nice job I like the handle wrap too. Almost naked but not quite. Does it stay in place good like that.
-
Very nice. I like everything about that.
-
Thanks, everyone. :)
RPS3 - I encountered a bit of set while tillering, so I decided to heat treat the belly. Still ended up with a tiny bit of set, but has a lot more snap to the shot than before. Next time, I will heat treat before tillering.
BJROGG - I wrapped it fairly tight and ran some super glue along it here and there. Seems pretty solid so far.

That is a great looking hickory bow. I like it.

Outstanding!

Yep, you can't beat a good piece of hickory.
Very nice looking bow.

Nice work, You usually hear people saying to use the sapwood on hickory, so it's cool to see this
-
You have your own style Cloudfeather. Outstanding craftsmanship. I feel like I could pick one of your bows out of a pile. Nice work as always.

Wow thanks for posting this! theres a lot for me to learn about tillering from those pictures, awesome bow!
-
Awesome Job. I only have one question, why didn't you steam in or heat in the tips and bend them so that the double overlays " belly and back " wouldn't be needed ?
-
That's a very nice bow, man!! Congrats!!

I wrapped a wet rag and aluminum foil around the area I planned to bend and heated with a heat gun. I guess I didn't let it heat/steam long enough. Lol

That is one heck of a hickory bow. Great attention to detail. Love the grain curve in top limb.
-
Just beautiful, great job Cloud!
The back looks super nice like ice cream

I wondered how heartwood hickory would respond to the heat. Maybe someday I will get around to using all the heartwood belly splits I have laying around. Thanks for the inspiration.
Using a Heat gun for any tight bend in hickory has always resulted in a cracked belly for me. 1 hr in the steam is all I do now.

Thanks, lol. I've never heard ice cream used to describe a bow before.
-
Very nice bow and well tillered!

Nice job with the character/tiller/and tip work on that hickory.Hickory is one of my favorite woods for a bow. With the heat treatment done to it you can expect it to serve you well.I've always assumed that hickory heartwood would be a tad more brittle than the sapwood. It must have some type of nonrotting qualities to it.I make bows from it and burn it in my stove.A log from a dead fall on the ground will have the sapwood punky but the heartwood will be fairly hard yet.
