Title: Heat gun question
Post by: Lumberman on April 02, 2016, 10:19:07 am
So I am going to try "toasting" this bow I am working on, since it's my first attempt I wasn't going to try placing it on a caul, my question is do I need to clamp it down any ways or can I just do it while it's resting on the table

Hi lumber man I've never toasted belly but if you are really going for heat treating from watching Marc's video it seems you would want it clamped and something to hold heat gun. Sound on video was very hard to hear but I think he spent approx 1 hr. on each limb

I would put handle in vice anyways.

You'll get deflex if you don't clamp it at least straight.

At least put a block under the handle and clamp the tips down, even a 1× under the back will help

And if you have done any previous heat correction on this bow that area will try to go back to where it was. A caul is simple to make.
