I needed another project besides knapping, hide tannin, and messing with primitive fire, Here's a couple pics of my cedar strip canoe with here final coat of fiberglass on the outside. Need to glass the inside and install trim and seats and she should be ready for her maiden voyage. I live close to French creek which dumps into the Alleghany then the Ohio and the Mississippi, wonder how long it would take me get from just south of Lake Erie to New Orleans, people way before me were headed there. Maybe I'll try it soon as I reach my 2nd childhood, ahhh hell I'm already livin my 2nd childhood. :o :o ;D Bob

Very nice canoe Bob.
Some kids from Brevard College here set out on the French Broad River here a few years ago, headed north to the Tennessee then to the Ohio and Mississippi to New Orleans. Took them 3 months. Bon voyage! ;D

Nice job, I have been wanting to make one of them. It takes a lot of time and is no cheap date as you know. My neighbor just drove by this morning with his on top of his truck.
-
Way to perty for me to use even a day.
COOL project.
I use to work for a surveyor. That make a birch bark canoe. I was all so SWEETTTTTTTTTTTTT.

Excellent! I have one on the drawing board of my mind, getting kinda of dusty. I have some left over cedar deck boards, that I will make a trestle table out of, and what is left over, I will saw into 1/8 inch thick strips, by 1 1/2 inch wide. Whenever I can afford to get a band saw! I am going to use the west system, to do it. That is beautiful. Are you going to put cane seats in it? You can get them at GlenL boats, or are you going to make your own, or something else? Again Very Nice! 8)

I have had in mind to build one for a while, money always being an issue with any project I think about. I have the pattern for molds and the plans for the wee lassie 2 by mac mccarthy but was worried about length of boards, I noticed you spliced a few of yours and feel I will have to go that route when I try due to cost restraints. I will also have to cut and do my own bead and cove on the boards but feel as though all the sweat equity will greatly help to offset some of the cost. Your canoe looks great by the way, one day I will try but got a whole lot of projects in the work right now. Have a house that is being remoldeled right now thought I might could use some of leftover plywood for molds and hopefully have some lumber for strongback also. By the way how long is your canoe.

Darin, the expenses are a little more than I figured and splices are okay, not totally necessary to bead and cove but uses less filler if coved. Mine is called the Bob's Special and is 15'-6",it is a variation of an old Chesnut Canoe from the 50's, it's been a fun project that I need to push for the finish and get to fishin, I am close but still plenty of things to do. Fiberglass and epoxy seemed to be the biggest expense so far. Bob

OUTSTANDING looking canoe Bob.
-
Thanks for the information and hope you enjoy.
-
Super impressive. Love to try that someday, Bob. Congratulations.

I've dreamt of that same trip, but as voyageurs in the Boundary Waters of Minnesota....during moose season and with a moose tag!

Yep, As Simon Kenton (Butler) would have done......
Down the Ohio......up the Kentucky river to Boonesboro.

That is beautiful.
It will now become a family heirloom, for the next 100-200 years.

My brother-in-law bought one from an old lady. Her hubby made it and died just shy of finishing it. It sat on a pair of sawhorses in her family room for 22 years. We put gunnel strips on it and it was done. Nice canoe but it looked like any leftover resin got poured into the bottom. 16' and it was all the two of us could carry.
