Hi, long time lurker and here for my first post. I've always built board bows or laminates, but recently got my hands on some nice osage and yew staves, so trying some self bows.
Been working my Osage down and while checking alignment I've noticed it's slightly twisted. I've read heat is best for Osage, but I'm not sure if this is twisted enough to worry about or not in a self bow.

I don't worry about twist if the string tracks down center and the string stays safely in the grooves. You wont feel it or notice it if those two things occur.

Thanks!
My other problem is that while the stave one the whole has some nice natural reflex, one time has significant deflex. This is around a knot though, so would heat bending/steam bending still work fine?

Get it floor tillered as is, then apply dry heat where needed. Id suggest balancing it out, its much easier to see the tiller.
-
I heard you should clamp it down and leave it for 5-15 years.
-
what thought it was 20 years :)
-
For some reason I can't see your pictures , but I use dry heat for most minor corrections on Osage and am careful around knots, sometimes you just have to live with what Mother nature gives you if holes or knots are in the picture. :) You ant right PatM. ;) :)

I dont know about that one , Im a newer bowyer but that stave looks exstreamly chalanging for your first stave bow if it was me I would shelve that one & find another stave thats less head ache, Im sure some one around here could help you find one, just my 2 cents.
-
Roller coaster staves like yours with abrupt peaks are hard to heat correct.
-
I can't see any pictures that you posted. Might be just on my end.
-
Thanks all for the replies, think I'll just go slow and steady on this one and see how it turns out. All my pictures are from my Google Photos albums, not sure why they don't show up for some.
I've roughed out the profile and got it floor tillered, so now the fun part begins.

Can't see the pictures...

almost all of my self bows have some degree of twist. I can't see the pics, but it probably isn't a problem.
