Title: Slightly piqued (Pics up!) 60@26 48ntn
Post by: sleek on February 17, 2016, 06:12:43 pm
So I am enamoured over this reflex handle deflex fade recurve tip ( reckon I coulda just said 5 curve and saved myself some typing and this explination ) design. Most yall will recollect lebhuntfishes design The Fury and my mini me reproduction slightly ticked. I have an itch me thinks and I must scratch.

I am now trying a 49 inch version to go 55@26. String pinch may become a problem. If it works out I will make one mkre same stats but going to 28. For lack of a pre shaped stave, i am steaming one now. Hope it comes out.

String pinch, heck just shoot it thumb release, it's practically a horse bow anyway ;)

Good point. I got to make it first though... I got the handle reflex in good and now am deflexing the fades, getting that nice horse bow look  8)

Well, no pics yet but i got it back to 60@24. Bad practice to go heavier than you want but oh well. I have 4 more inches to go to get to my target weight. Maybe i will make it a 60#@26 bow. See how it feels.

This bow wants to resist... Its one of those that no mater how much wood you remove it wont loose weight. I really hate it when that happens.

Just another little update add on. 55@24.

I just measured set. 1.5 inches so far. I expect 2 when done. Think i will stick with 55# to keep set down. On my next one thats going to draw 28 inches i will see about a higher draw weight depending on how much set it takes.

Question is, do i take it to 60@26 with a 48 ntn stiff handle bow?

Screw it.

60#@26" 1 3/4 inches of set.

Im claiming victory.

I will try to get pics up tomorrow.

Sounds like a victory to me!  I'd take it.  Even at 26" draw, that's a pretty short bow...

Thanks redhand. I am already planning its overdrawn sibling with a tempered belly. Going to 50@28 and a heat treat to keep set down a touch. I think I'm gonna call it.....

Short tempered.

Hey bob, glad you like the name. Im sticking with the angry name line. What are your stats? If you do much brush hunting i could crank one out for you for our personal trade, if you like and of course if the bow performs well. The fury is a tall order to follow.

Man that looks like a turkey hunter for sure. Sittin on your rear next to a tree with a big strutter at 15 steps. Yep, i like that bow.

Get one that close and you wont even need to stand up with this bow. Just lean over and pop him. I never turkey hunted, there arent many in this area. And for the effort i think the grocery is a better spot. Maybe one day.... When there are more around.

Hey Jo5h, remember them billets you gave me at erics house? This is one of them. Thought you might get a kick out of that. I still have the other three and I owe you a bow if I recall proper?

I prefer around 64 inch. But there is some tree stand situations that need a shorter bow.

Very cool sleek! Now on the next one put some horn on the belly and some sinew on the front and....lol I kid I kid. :)

I have throught of carving a pocket out the fades to mid limb and inserting a horn slat then sinew wrapping it with sinew on the back. Doing that would let me reflex the crap out of the fade and allowing a higher stress design with lightweight tips. Tiller it so the last half works and is recurved.

I like it. I like it a lot. If I recall correctly, those billets were rather straight. So, I guess all the interesting curves in the handle and fades are your doing? I do really like the way it came out. 26" from 48" ntn with a stiff handle is much more ambitious than I've ever been, but you pulled it off quite nicely. Can't wait to see it all dressed up.

I believe you're right, I am owed a bow and some maple arrow shafts as well. I had almost forgotten. Do you think you could scale that up slightly? 28" from 48" ntn is to much to ask I think. If you spliced two of the billets, could you still achieve that handle and fade look? Nevermind, you'll come up with something.

Really nice looking bow Sleek!  Did you use dry heat on those curves, and is it possible to see a picture of your caul?  Thanks.  Will B.

There is actually more to that caul its just on its side so i could use the bat to force more reflex. The top side just has a running flat with a sloping curve at the end to treat in reflex tips.

Just a couple of half moon shaped scraps would help make the bend at the dips a bit more symmetrical.

Glad you like it so much Willb. I am finding myself to be partial to it also.

I did somes hooting with it yesterda at a big round hay bail. I had the arrows burrying to the fletchings and actually lost one in the bail. Cant find it. It seems to have plenty of power. But it could just be that the hay bail was an older one too. Regardless, i feel confident it will make a deer very sleepy. We shall see. I will shoot it all summer to really get a ceel for it and make another if i need to with proper modifications made to hunt with, if i decide not to hunt with this one.

Patm, i think you just gave me a neat idea for a caul.
