This was, by far, the trickiest piece of Osage I've yet to tackle. Between the snakiness and the original left to right undulations that I had to heat correct, this bow was definitely a lesson in humility. It took about 7 goes with the heat gun to tame it into a suitable shape, but I think it worked out well.
This was my first attempt at a Reflex/Deflex design and I'm extremely happy with the final result and how she shoots. I named it "Sidewinder" because, every time I would show my old man progress pictures, he would excitedly exclaim "That's a sidewinder!" Lol. The tiller isn't perfect but she draws and shoots very smooth. I'll take it. 8) Hope everyone enjoys.

wow, great work. my brain hurts just lookin at that thing. very cool!
-
Nice job. That is a great looking piece of Osage. The tiller great too. I bet that was tough to accomplish.
-
Wow! I wouldn't imagine making a bow, and not the least a RD design, out of such a crooked piece of wood. Never worked osage, but this is some nasty stuff. Excellent job
-
Outstanding! You did a great job on a very challenging stave!
Jawge

You made a very wonderful bow. I like it very much
Peter

Wow! That is fantastic!
-
Sweet!!
-
thats nice looking stick. You done a great job
-
I would be impressed to see any bow at all come out of wood like that, but you've made a work of art! Pretty darn sweet, especially at dull draw :o
-
Just wonderin, did you p"&$ off sidewinder before he sent that to ya?😜

Lol, this was from my stash of 60yr old osage log staves. Just happened to be all funky.

I forgot to mention...
The tips were done with a leather dye that I faded with some acetone. the rattlesnake skins were leftovers from a bow I did about a year and a half ago, and there was a small scar along the belly which I painted with some turquoise acrylic paint.
-
That turned out great, James! I love everything about it. Your fade with the stain turned out well. I'll have to give that a try.
-
Wow, that's impressive! Beautiful work on that tough stave.
-
Great job, Snakier the better! John
-
Nice job and a tough stave, them kind of staves will teach you a lot that is for sure. :)

Great job, those kinks in a stave drive me up a wall, you seem to have a good eye.
-
Thanks guys. I wasn't quite sure what I was doing as I tillered it, so I tried to make sure the tips were close to bending even. I guess just balancing the inner part of the limb bending with the outer parts opening up. Will definitely have to try a R/D design again.
-
WOW! Nice character bow. You did a great job on that piece.
-
Wow. A bow like that is a lesson in patience that not very many modern wood workers would understand. Congratulations for getting through it, good job!
-
That's one craxzy bow! I like it. Way to save it from the scrap pile ;D ;D ;D
-
Wow, what a bow, take a bow like that to the range and you'll spend more time talking to folks about it than shooting, very impressive work!
-
Lol, I've still yet to get to any local archery ranges around my area. I'm going to try and make it a point to do so in the near future.
-
O man, what a Bow! That was a stave I would never dare to tame. You turned it to a functional artwork!
-
Woo, great work...

That looks to be well worth the effort. Way to test your skills and turn out a fine bow with some wicked looks. 8)

Great job, very cool profiles on this one.

very nice, congrats.

Damn, that looks awesome! Wicked!
-
Wow!that turned out beautiful, great job on that character stave!
-
That bow looks sexy for sure.
Looking at the faded stain, what is this - are there violated rings or is this painted?
I'm convinced the bow shoots good, and your asking a lot from that wood - most of the bend in the inner thirds - probably only possible with osage
-
Simson - Thank you. :) The rings aren't violated at the yip, this piece had what I call "ghost rings" where the grain looks like there are multiple ring layers in each ring. Only ever saw that one other time. Needless to say, chasing a ring was a real head scratcher. Lol

Lunar rings

Nice job! I'm a fan of them snakey staves! You done this one justice!!
-
I would say you nailed that one. Nice work.
-
Carson - I don't know any better, but I thought the "lunar" aspect was a myth? More to do with weather, rainfall, etc? I'm just curious as I'm just recently learning about it.
